Comparing to Alternatives

Formidable Forms competes in a crowded WordPress form-builder market that includes both lightweight contact form tools and advanced application-building platforms. It stands out for developers who need deep customization, but faces stiff competition from plugins offering more modern interfaces or simpler onboarding.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Extremely flexible field types and layout options for complex, data-heavy forms
Strong developer hooks and code examples for custom functionality
Highly praised, responsive customer support
Capable of building full applications (views, reports, calculators) beyond simple contact forms
Long track record and mature feature set refined over many years

Weaknesses

User interface and styling are considered dated and opinionated by some users
Steeper learning curve compared to newer, more streamlined builders
Long vulnerability history compared to some competitors

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.8-star average across 1,381 ratings and over 91% five-star reviews, sentiment toward Formidable Forms is overwhelmingly positive. Only about 4.6% of reviews fall into the 1-2 star range, and recurring themes in the higher ratings center on power, flexibility, and support quality.

Positive highlights

frenchieboy praised getting support 'within minutes' with a brilliant, accurate answer
therealcaveman called it 'the best forms plugin if you need control,' citing excellent support and value for money
mccawphoto described it as 'the best form plugin period' due to endless customization possibilities
webshell008 said they scrapped three other plugins before finding Formidable's styling and layout options perfect
BlueSteam highlighted 'incredible support and brilliantly powerful' features despite initial pricing concerns

Common complaints

Pro-licensed forms with premium fields can become partially uneditable once a license expires, even though the pricing page emphasizes renewal only in fine print
Some users report forms unexpectedly breaking or requiring rebuilds without a clear explanation
The user interface and default styling are seen as unattractive, intrusive, and difficult to override
Inline documentation is considered lacking for developers trying to customize forms

Weaknesses

Extensive history of 18 known vulnerabilities, including multiple critical-severity issues like remote code execution and unsafe deserialization
Recent high-severity flaws (2026) involving unauthenticated XSS and payment manipulation show ongoing security exposure
Interface and styling criticisms suggest a less polished experience than some modern competitors
Pro feature access tied tightly to active license renewal can frustrate users who built critical functionality on paid fields

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Formidable Forms suits developers, agencies, and power users who need to build complex, data-driven forms, applications, calculators, or multi-step workflows with extensive customization and code-level hooks. Users who value strong, hands-on support and are comfortable with a steeper learning curve will get the most value.

Not ideal for

It's less ideal for users wanting a simple, quick-to-style contact form, or those uncomfortable with a plugin that has a long history of security vulnerabilities, some of critical severity. Site owners who need guaranteed long-term editability of Pro-built forms without lapses should also carefully review licensing terms before committing.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version provides a genuinely usable form builder with core field types, basic styling, and enough functionality for many small sites, as reflected in reviews praising its capability even without upgrading.

Pro version (39.50 - 299.50 USD / year)

The paid tiers unlock advanced fields (including sections), calculations, payment integrations, reporting/views, and premium support. However, several users note that once a license lapses, previously built Pro-dependent form elements can become uneditable, so ongoing renewal is effectively required to maintain full functionality.

Final Verdict

Formidable Forms earns its strong 4.8-star reputation through genuine flexibility, developer-friendly architecture, and consistently praised support. For users building advanced forms, calculators, or lightweight applications, it remains one of the more capable options in the WordPress ecosystem, and the overwhelmingly positive review distribution backs this up.

That said, prospective users should weigh two real concerns: a lengthy history of security vulnerabilities, including recent high-severity issues, and complaints about clunky styling plus Pro-feature lock-in tied to license renewal. Those needing simpler, more modern-feeling builders, or who prioritize a cleaner security track record, may want to compare alternatives like WPForms or Fluent Forms before committing.
