What It Does

Ninja Forms is one of the oldest form builders for WordPress, designed to grow with your business. It caters to users from various backgrounds, including small businesses, nonprofits, universities, and large corporations. The plugin is built to scale with your needs, providing essential tools for free while allowing you to add premium features as your requirements grow.

The core features include over 24 free drag-and-drop form fields, customizable notifications, and unlimited forms and submissions. Ninja Forms emphasizes user privacy, ensuring that your data remains secure and private without aggressive marketing tactics.

As you expand your needs, you can choose from a variety of premium add-ons that enhance the core functionality. These add-ons cover advanced features, submission management, payment processing, email marketing integrations, and much more. The plugin is fully documented and supported by a dedicated team ready to assist users at any stage.

Comparing to Alternatives

Ninja Forms is a long-established drag-and-drop form builder competing in a crowded field of WordPress form plugins. It differentiates itself through a mature add-on ecosystem and responsive support, but faces stiff competition from newer and more tightly integrated alternatives.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Intuitive drag-and-drop interface praised by beginners and advanced users alike
Highly rated, responsive customer support that resolves issues quickly
Flexible add-on system (e.g. File Uploads, CleverReach) covering many use cases
Free version offers generous field options for building functional forms

Weaknesses

Long history of security vulnerabilities, including some critical-severity issues
Advanced functionality and extensibility often require paid add-ons
Recent versions introduced intrusive review/rating popups frustrating users

User Sentiment Analysis

With 1,395 ratings, Ninja Forms holds a solid 4.4/5 average, driven by a strong 78.6% five-star share. However, a notable 13.6% of reviews are 1-2 star, pointing to a vocal minority frustrated by specific issues rather than core functionality.

Positive highlights

"The Ninja Forms team responds faster than most and actually gets the job done" — stargfxllc
"Great plugin, I've been using it with great satisfaction for several years now. The support is fantastic" — Fred
"Ninja forms seems to have a great UI for the creation of custom Forms and I personally love it!" — Periklis Kakarakidis
"NF were incredibly responsive and worked tirelessly to fix the issue and gave us an early release" — blueflamingo
"We've been using this plugin in our company website for many years and it has performed very well" — mtislam

Common complaints

Intrusive and repeated popups asking users to rate the plugin
Popups appearing during basic setup/testing before users can evaluate the plugin
Frustration that an update pushing review prompts felt untested and disruptive
Perceived limited ability to extend, hook, or build upon the plugin compared to paid alternatives

Weaknesses

Extensive vulnerability history, including a critical PHP Object Injection flaw and multiple high-severity issues
Frequent security patches suggest ongoing risk requiring vigilant updates
Some core functionality gated behind paid add-ons, limiting free-tier extensibility
Recurring UI/UX complaints around promotional popups undermine user trust

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Ninja Forms suits WordPress site owners who want a flexible, beginner-friendly form builder backed by consistently praised customer support, and who are comfortable maintaining prompt updates for security patches. It's a good fit for businesses already invested in its add-on ecosystem, such as CleverReach or file upload extensions.

Not ideal for

Given its lengthy vulnerability history—including a critical-severity object injection flaw—users prioritizing airtight security or those who cannot guarantee immediate updates should proceed cautiously or consider alternatives with cleaner track records. Users who dislike intrusive plugin popups or need deep customization without purchasing add-ons may also find the experience limiting.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version provides a functional drag-and-drop form builder with a range of open fields, suitable for general contact forms, feedback forms, and simple registration forms, as noted by long-term users.

Pro version (49 - 299 USD / year)

Paid add-ons extend functionality with features like file uploads, email marketing integrations (e.g., CleverReach), payment processing, and other specialized fields, allowing the plugin to scale from simple contact forms to more complex use cases.

Final Verdict

Ninja Forms remains a capable and widely trusted form builder, backed by strong user sentiment around its ease of use and standout customer support. Its high five-star share reflects genuine satisfaction among long-term users, though the meaningful 1-2 star segment—driven largely by intrusive rating popups—shows some erosion of user goodwill in recent updates.

The plugin's extensive security vulnerability history, including a critical-severity flaw and several high-severity issues over the years, is the most significant caveat for prospective users. While the developers have consistently patched these issues, the sheer volume warrants caution for security-conscious site owners. Given strong alternatives like WPForms, Fluent Forms, and Formidable Forms that offer comparable functionality, Ninja Forms is best suited for existing users satisfied with its ecosystem and support, rather than a default first choice for new installations.
