What It Does

Payments made simple, with no monthly fees – designed exclusively for WooCommerce stores.

Securely accept major credit and debit cards, and allow customers to pay you directly without leaving your WooCommerce store. View and manage transactions from one convenient place – your WordPress dashboard.

See payments, track cash flow into your bank account, manage refunds, and stay on top of disputes without the hassle of having to log into a separate payment processor.

Manage transactions from the comfort of your store. Features previously only available on your payment provider’s website are now part of your store’s integrated payments dashboard. This enables you to view the details of payments, refunds, and other transactions, respond to disputes and chargebacks, and track payouts into your bank account or debit card.

WooPayments is free to install, with no setup fees or monthly fees. Our pay-as-you-go pricing model means we are incentivized to help you succeed.

Comparing to Alternatives

WooPayments sits in a crowded field of WooCommerce payment gateways, competing against direct processor integrations and multi-gateway plugins alike. Its main draw is native, all-in-one integration with WooCommerce, but many alternatives offer more direct control over the underlying processor.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Deep native integration with WooCommerce, including reporting and order management
Supports multiple payment methods (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay) out of the box
Consistently praised for responsive, knowledgeable customer support
No separate plugin licensing costs since it's free to install

Weaknesses

Acts as a middleman over Stripe, adding a layer some users find unnecessary and costly
Requires WordPress.com account connection, which frustrates self-hosted site owners
History of serious security vulnerabilities, including a critical privilege escalation flaw

User Sentiment Analysis

With 168 ratings, WooPayments shows a sharply polarized distribution: 55.4% five-star reviews alongside 36.3% one-star reviews, leaving little middle ground. The overall tone in recent reviews leans positive, largely driven by praise for support quality, though a vocal minority reports serious frustrations.

Positive highlights

"They were quick to respond and ended up getting everything updated to get the store processing as it should" — Wayne Ingraham
"WooCommerce support was extremely quick to respond, understood the problem and fixed it in no time" — peterleyssens
"Setup is straightforward, the plugin does exactly what it promises" — jumantj
"It has been easy to use, very customizable for payout frequency/dates, and the fees are fine" — Anonymous
"Their support is fast, effective and helpful" — zhuxiaojie903

Common complaints

Feels like an unnecessary middleman over Stripe, adding cost without clear benefit
Forces use of WordPress.com credentials even on self-hosted stores, contradicting the appeal of self-hosting
No phone support and poor assistance with chargeback disputes, according to one reviewer
Banks reportedly flag WooPayments as high-risk, leading to rejected high-value orders
Layout shift issues on checkout pages that don't follow WordPress best practices

Weaknesses

Seven recorded vulnerabilities historically, including a critical (CVSS 10) unauthenticated privilege escalation flaw
A medium-severity unauthenticated settings update vulnerability was only fixed as recently as 10.6.0
Payout speed can be slow in some regions, with delays of several business days
Mandatory account connection model is a friction point for privacy or self-hosting-conscious users

Who Should Use This?

Best for

WooPayments suits WooCommerce store owners who want a tightly integrated, no-extra-plugin payment solution and who value responsive human support when issues arise. It's a reasonable default for merchants prioritizing simplicity over granular control of the payment processor.

Not ideal for

It's less suitable for merchants who want direct control over their Stripe or PayPal account, object to WordPress.com account requirements, or run high-risk/high-value transaction businesses that may face processor scrutiny. Given the plugin's history of significant vulnerabilities—including a critical privilege escalation issue—security-conscious store owners should ensure they're running the latest version and monitoring for updates closely.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

WooPayments is free to install and includes full payment processing integration, multiple payment methods, reporting, and dispute handling tools directly within WooCommerce, with revenue generated through transaction fees rather than licensing.

Final Verdict

WooPayments delivers a genuinely convenient, well-integrated payment experience for many WooCommerce stores, and its support team earns consistent praise across reviews. However, the near 40% share of 1-2 star ratings signals real dissatisfaction, particularly around the mandatory WordPress.com connection, middleman markup over Stripe, and shortcomings in dispute/chargeback support.

The plugin's security track record is a genuine concern, with seven known vulnerabilities including a critical privilege escalation flaw patched years ago and a medium-severity settings update issue fixed only recently. Combined with a crowded field of alternatives offering more direct processor control, WooPayments is best suited to store owners who value simplicity and support over granular control, provided they stay diligent about updates.
