What It Does

Search Regex adds a powerful set of search and replace functions to WordPress posts, pages, custom post types, and other data sources. These go beyond the standard searching capabilities, and allow you to search and replace almost any data stored on your site. In addition to simple searches you have the full power of PHP's regular expressions at your disposal.

You can use this to do things like help migrate a site from one domain to another, update URLs in links and images, and perform site-wide changes.

Search filters can be created to match any column of any WordPress table. For example, you can find all posts in a category, find all post meta data without a post, or find all posts in a date range.

Search Regex handles small and large sites and has been tested with PHP from 7.0 to 8.3.

You can search posts, pages, any custom post type, comments (including spam), users, meta data, WordPress options, and supported plugins such as Redirection.

Full regular expression support is provided, and you can capture data and use it in the replacement.

A variety of actions can be performed on matching results, including modifying and replacing the result, deleting the result, exporting to CSV and SQL, and performing custom PHP actions.

Results can be individually modified by clicking on the item to change, and using the popup modifier. Bulk modifications can be performed against all matching results.

The types of modification depend on the data being changed, such as adding or subtracting numbers, adding to dates, or modifying tags and categories.

Custom shortcodes are supported that allow dynamic data to be included, such as adding the current date and time, inserting data from other columns, or transforming existing data.

Some ideas for potential uses include deleting all comments that match a phrase, adding a category to all matching posts, or removing orphaned meta data.

Please submit bugs, patches, and feature requests to the GitHub repository or submit translations to the WordPress translation project. Full documentation can be found on the Search Regex site.

Comparing to Alternatives

Search Regex competes with a crowded field of search-and-replace and redirection tools. It stands out for offering regex-powered search and replace across posts, meta, and comments for free, whereas many competitors reserve advanced pattern matching for paid tiers.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Full regular expression support for complex search-and-replace patterns
Free access to power-user features that rivals often paywall
Preview functionality before committing changes
Well-regarded for large-scale content migrations and cleanup

Weaknesses

The 'Delete Matches' feature can be misunderstood and cause irreversible data loss
Less beginner-friendly than simpler search-and-replace tools aimed at non-technical users

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.7/5 average from 101 ratings and 86% five-star reviews, sentiment toward Search Regex is overwhelmingly positive. Only 4% of reviewers gave 1-2 stars, and those complaints center on a single, specific feature rather than the plugin's core functionality.

Positive highlights

"Incredibly useful and powerful plugin" — Dade
"An absolute must-have for people migrating huge data and having to correct loads of broken links. Does for free... what others promise to provide if you pay first" — franckmee
"Works perfectly. For those having issues, you need to proceed with regex with caution" — Alex
"Incredibly powerful search tool for your dashboard... make sure you preview any replacements first!" — kelson
"Thank you for this wonderful super helpful plugin!" — humananimal

Common complaints

The 'Delete Matches' button deletes entire posts (and associated media) instead of just the matched text, with no warning
Deleted content does not move to trash, making the action irreversible

Weaknesses

A destructive feature ('Delete Matches') carries real risk of accidental, unrecoverable data loss
Lack of clear warning or confirmation before destructive actions
Regex functionality requires technical caution that not all users may exercise

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Developers, site migrators, and technically confident users who need powerful, free regex-based search and replace across posts, meta, and comments—especially useful when consolidating URLs, fixing broken links, or restructuring large sites.

Not ideal for

Cautious or non-technical users who might use the 'Delete Matches' feature without understanding it removes entire posts and media rather than just matched text. Anyone unwilling to back up their site first should avoid the delete functionality, or the plugin entirely if they're uncomfortable with regex.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version delivers full regex search-and-replace functionality across post content, meta fields, and comments, along with a preview mode—capabilities that many competing plugins reserve for premium upgrades.

Final Verdict

Search Regex earns strong praise for delivering genuinely powerful, free search-and-replace capabilities that rival paid alternatives, backed by a 4.7-star average and minimal negative feedback. WPScan reports no known vulnerabilities and a very low risk score, reinforcing its reliability from a security standpoint.

The main caution is the 'Delete Matches' feature, which multiple reviewers found dangerously misleading—removing entire posts and media rather than just the matched text, with no trash safety net. Users who stick to replace functionality and always back up before using regex will find this an excellent, no-cost tool; those wanting simpler, safer interfaces might consider alternatives like Better Search Replace instead.
