What It Does

Imsanity automatically resizes huge image uploads. Choose whatever size and quality you like, and let Imsanity do the rest. When a contributor uploads an image that is larger than the configured size, Imsanity will automatically scale it down to the configured size and replace the original image.

Imsanity also provides a bulk-resize feature to resize previously uploaded images and free up disk space. You may resize individual images from the Media Library's List View.

This plugin is ideal for blogs that do not require hi-resolution original images to be stored and/or the contributors don't want (or understand how) to scale images before uploading.

Once enabled, Imsanity requires no actions on the part of the user. It uses WordPress built-in image scaling functions to ensure seamless integration.

Comparing to Alternatives

Imsanity operates in a crowded field of image optimization plugins, most of which focus on compression algorithms, WebP/AVIF conversion, or CDN delivery. Imsanity's niche is different: it specifically targets oversized image dimensions on upload, automatically resizing and replacing bloated originals before they clutter the media library.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Extremely simple, focused feature set that just resizes oversized uploads without added complexity
No ads, upsells, or nagging popups, unlike many freemium competitors
Works well with bulk processing and WP-CLI for cleaning up existing media libraries
Pairs nicely alongside compression/WebP plugins rather than competing directly with them

Weaknesses

Lacks the compression, WebP/AVIF conversion, and CDN features that most alternatives bundle in
No percentage-based resizing option, only fixed pixel dimensions
Users needing a full optimization suite will likely need a second plugin alongside Imsanity

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.9/5 rating from 292 reviews and 95.2% five-star ratings, Imsanity enjoys near-universal praise. Only 2.1% of reviews fall into the 1-2 star range, suggesting very few users have had a negative experience.

Positive highlights

"Great, fast, efficient, no ads, no unnecessary pop-ups... that's it" — 456he4v5454bg5g4
"I love that you're able to resize the original image, allowing you to save valuable server space" — Anthony Hortin
"I scaled more than 1200 pictures in 20 minutes without any problem" — nicolashol
"It also works well from WP CLI, to bulk-process images on first use. I prefer Imsanity to image-smushing plugins these days" — Paul
"It also works with WebP, so combined with Cimo you have a perfect scenario for a health media library" — Topher

Common complaints

Weaknesses

No feature requests, like the percentage-based resize option suggested by one reviewer, appear to have public tracking or response
The plugin's narrow focus means users expecting full compression/optimization may be initially confused about scope

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Imsanity is ideal for site owners and agencies dealing with clients who upload oversized images straight from phones or cameras without resizing first. It's a great lightweight addition for anyone wanting to protect server space and page load times without adding a heavy, feature-laden optimization suite.

Not ideal for

Users looking for a single all-in-one solution with compression, WebP/AVIF conversion, and CDN delivery should look elsewhere, since Imsanity intentionally sticks to resizing. There are no recorded security vulnerabilities, so security is not a concern for any user type.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version includes the plugin's complete feature set: automatic resizing of oversized image uploads, bulk processing of existing media libraries, WP-CLI support, and configurable maximum dimensions, all with no ads or upsell prompts.

Final Verdict

Imsanity stands out for doing one job extremely well: preventing oversized images from bloating your media library and slowing down your site. With a 4.9/5 rating across 292 reviews, virtually no negative feedback, and zero recorded security vulnerabilities, it has earned strong trust from its user base. Reviewers consistently praise its simplicity, speed, and lack of ads or upsells, a refreshing contrast to some bloated alternatives in this space.

That said, Imsanity isn't a full image optimization solution, it doesn't compress files or convert formats like WebP/AVIF on its own, so users wanting an all-in-one tool should consider pairing it with a compression plugin or choosing from the many alternatives listed. For its specific purpose, though, Imsanity is a low-risk, highly reliable, completely free choice.
