What It Does

Loco Translate provides in-browser editing of WordPress translation files and integration with automatic translation services.

It also provides Gettext/localization tools for developers, such as extracting strings and generating templates.

Features include a built-in translation editor within WordPress admin, integration with translation APIs including DeepL, Google, Lecto, Microsoft, and OpenAI. Users can create and update language files directly in their theme or plugin.

The plugin allows extraction of translatable strings from source code and native MO file compilation without the need for Gettext on your system. It also supports JSON (Jed) file compilation compatible with WordPress script localization.

Loco Translate supports standard PO features including comments, references, and plural forms. It provides a PO source view with clickable source code references and a protected language directory for saving custom translations.

Users can configure PO file backups with diff and restore capability, and it includes built-in WordPress locale codes.

Comparing to Alternatives

Loco Translate occupies a distinct niche compared to most alternatives, focusing on in-dashboard translation of themes and plugins rather than full site multilingual solutions. Tools like Polylang, TranslatePress, and Weglot target end-to-end multilingual site building, while Loco Translate is aimed more at developers and site owners needing to translate software strings.

Top alternatives

Not a full multilingual site solution like Polylang or TranslatePress
History of multiple security vulnerabilities compared to some alternatives
Occasional compatibility issues reported with other major plugins like WooCommerce

Common complaints

Weaknesses

A documented history of eight known vulnerabilities, including high-severity CVEs for remote code execution and code injection in past versions

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Loco Translate is ideal for developers, translators, and site owners who need to translate custom themes and plugins directly from the WordPress dashboard without editing .po files externally. It's a great fit for anyone managing translation workflows for bespoke or niche software components.

Not ideal for

It's not designed for users seeking a complete multilingual website solution with automatic content translation and language switchers—those needs are better served by dedicated multilingual plugins. Given its history of several high-severity vulnerabilities in past versions, security-conscious users must ensure they always run the latest version.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version offers full core functionality: in-dashboard editing of translation files, string extraction from themes and plugins, and .po/.mo file management, all at no cost.

Final Verdict

Loco Translate earns strong praise from its user base, with an overwhelming majority of 5-star reviews highlighting its simplicity, reliability, and helpful support for translating themes and plugins. It fills a specific niche that broader multilingual plugins like Polylang or TranslatePress don't address, making it a valuable tool for developers and site owners working with custom translations.

That said, its security track record—eight known vulnerabilities including high-severity RCE and code injection issues in older versions—is a real consideration. Users should keep the plugin updated at all times. For those comfortable managing updates and needing developer-focused translation tools rather than a full multilingual solution, Loco Translate remains a well-regarded, free choice.
