What It Does

Polylang is a powerful plugin that integrates seamlessly with WordPress, enabling you to create a multilingual site effortlessly. You can add as many languages as you need, and WordPress will automatically download the necessary language packs.

This plugin supports translating posts, pages, media, categories, and custom post types. You can set the language using the URL or by utilizing sub-domains for each language. Polylang also provides a customizable language switcher and is compatible with popular plugins like Yoast SEO.

For enhanced functionality, Polylang Pro offers features like improved integration with the Block Editor, machine translation, and premium support. Additionally, Polylang for WooCommerce allows you to translate WooCommerce pages and products directly within the WooCommerce interface.

Comparing to Alternatives

Polylang is one of the most established multilingual plugins for WordPress, competing with both classic translation-linking tools and newer AI-driven automatic translation services. Its position depends on whether users want manual control over translations or prefer automated workflows.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Long track record with a large, loyal user base spanning many years
Free version offers genuinely functional multilingual setup, not just a teaser
Flexible manual translation-linking approach gives content control that automated tools lack
Wide compatibility with classic themes and builders like Elementor

Weaknesses

Free version reportedly struggles with full site editing (FSE) and block themes
Less suited to users wanting fully automated AI translation out of the box
Pro version compatibility gaps with some page builders like Breakdance

User Sentiment Analysis

With 2,984 ratings and an overall 4.7/5 average, sentiment toward Polylang is strongly positive — nearly 90% of reviewers give it 5 stars. Still, roughly 6% of users leave 1-2 star reviews, and these tend to cluster around Pro version purchases and support experiences rather than the free plugin's core functionality.

Positive highlights

"Have been using for 6 or 7 years. Never had a problem... very easy to write your article in a base language, and link to equivalent articles" — jackaspades

"It works like a charm with elementor!" — Lucas
"We have used this plugin for 10 years long. Easy to maintain. It works good." — Arman MS

Free version described as a poor experience with block themes and full site editing (FSE)
Pro version incompatibility with certain page builders like Breakdance, not disclosed upfront
Perceived unresponsive or unhelpful customer support
Plugin described as outdated for some newer WordPress themes

Multiple complaints about refund policies and support responsiveness for the paid tier
Free version reportedly weaker with block-based themes compared to classic themes

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Polylang suits site owners and developers who want granular, manual control over multilingual content — writing and linking translations post-by-post — especially on classic WordPress themes and builders like Elementor. Long-term users praise its reliability and lightweight footprint over many years of use.

Not ideal for

Users on block themes or full site editing setups may find the free version frustrating, per recent complaints. Those wanting fully automated AI translation with guaranteed builder compatibility, or who are wary of restrictive refund policies on premium purchases, should weigh the Pro version's reported support and compatibility issues carefully before buying.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version provides a complete manual multilingual setup: writing content in multiple languages, linking translated posts/pages, and a working language switcher — enough for many users to run a fully multilingual site without paying, particularly on classic themes.

Pro version (99 - 139 EUR / year)

Polylang Pro adds features like automatic translation via DeepL integration, menu translation, page duplication, and SEO management tools. However, recent reviews report compatibility issues with certain page builders and dissatisfaction with the refund process, which prospective buyers should note.

Final Verdict

Polylang remains a trusted, widely-used multilingual plugin with a strong majority of satisfied long-term users who value its manual, content-first translation approach. The free version delivers real functionality, though it appears to lag behind on modern block themes and full site editing, an area worth testing before committing on newer WordPress builds.

The main friction points are concentrated in the Pro tier: refund disputes, unexpected builder incompatibilities, and support complaints recur across negative reviews, alongside a moderate security history including one medium-severity vulnerability now patched. Given the many alternatives available — from lightweight linkers to AI-powered automatic translators — buyers considering the paid version should test compatibility carefully first, while free-version users on classic themes can generally expect a solid, dependable experience.
