What It Does

Really Simple CAPTCHA is a CAPTCHA module intended for integration with other plugins, particularly Contact Form 7. This plugin does not operate independently and is designed to enhance the security of forms by generating CAPTCHA challenges.

It is important to note that Really Simple CAPTCHA is not highly secure, as its name suggests. For those requiring stronger security measures, alternative solutions should be considered.

The plugin functions by creating two files for each CAPTCHA: an image file and a text file containing the correct answer. This method avoids using PHP sessions, reducing potential conflicts within WordPress.

To implement Really Simple CAPTCHA in your plugin, create an instance of the ReallySimpleCaptcha class and customize it as needed. You can generate random words for CAPTCHA and manage the image and text files easily.

This plugin is straightforward to use and can be integrated into any WordPress site requiring basic CAPTCHA functionality.

Comparing to Alternatives

Really Simple CAPTCHA is a lightweight, no-frills image/math CAPTCHA generator often paired with Contact Form 7 or Gravity Forms. Compared to reCAPTCHA-style or broader anti-spam solutions, it's simpler but offers less automated spam filtering.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Simple, lightweight integration with Contact Form 7 and Gravity Forms
No API keys or external services required, unlike reCAPTCHA-based tools
Dynamic math CAPTCHA option adds variety over static challenges
Clean security track record with zero known vulnerabilities

Weaknesses

Lacks the heuristic or behavioral spam detection found in dedicated anti-spam plugins
No advanced customization or premium tier compared to more actively developed alternatives

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.2/5 average from 131 ratings, sentiment is largely positive: over 80% of reviewers gave 4 or 5 stars. However, a notable 17.6% left 1-2 star ratings, mostly tied to spam-related frustrations rather than technical bugs.

Positive highlights

afudo1tlg praised its smooth compatibility with WordPress 6.9 and Contact Form 7 6.1.4
Maxcom called it a great fit for Gravity Forms, highlighting the dynamic math CAPTCHA as a simple alternative to reCAPTCHA v3
nicolasvsedeco found it simple and effective, despite a minor display quirk on the Widgets page

Common complaints

Users report that spam submissions continued despite having the plugin active
One user removed the plugin entirely after experiencing a large volume of spam through Contact Form 7

Weaknesses

Some users feel it doesn't fully stop spam on its own
Minor UI quirks reported, such as unexpected banner display behavior in unrelated admin areas

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Ideal for site owners using Contact Form 7 or Gravity Forms who want a lightweight, self-hosted CAPTCHA without relying on third-party services like Google reCAPTCHA. Great for those prioritizing simplicity and privacy over advanced spam heuristics.

Not ideal for

Not the best fit for sites facing heavy, persistent spam attacks, since some users found it insufficient on its own. Those needing comprehensive automated spam filtering may prefer a dedicated anti-spam plugin instead.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The plugin is entirely free and provides full CAPTCHA generation functionality, including image and math-based challenges, with no feature restrictions or upsells.

Final Verdict

Really Simple CAPTCHA delivers on its name: a straightforward, dependable CAPTCHA solution that integrates easily with popular form plugins. Its strong overall rating and clean security history make it a low-risk choice for reducing basic spam without external API dependencies.

That said, a meaningful share of negative reviews point to its limits as a standalone spam solution, particularly for sites facing determined spam attacks. Users wanting guaranteed spam elimination may need to pair it with, or switch to, a more comprehensive anti-spam alternative, but for simple, self-hosted CAPTCHA needs, this plugin remains a solid, free option.

FAQ

Really Simple CAPTCHA needs GD and FreeType library installed on your server. Ask your server administrator if they are installed.

Also, make the temporary file folder writable. The location of the temporary file folder is managed by the instance variable tmp_dir of ReallySimpleCaptcha class. Note that the setting varies depending on the calling plugin. For example, Contact Form 7 uses wp-contents/uploads/wpcf7_captcha as the temporary folder basically, but it can use different folder depending on your settings.
