What It Does

Flamingo is a message storage plugin originally created for Contact Form 7, which doesn't store submitted messages.

After activation of the plugin, you'll find Flamingo on the WordPress admin screen menu. All messages through contact forms are listed there and are searchable. With Flamingo, you no longer need to worry about losing important messages due to mail server issues or misconfiguration in mail setup.

For more detailed information, please refer to the Contact Form 7 documentation page.

This plugin stores submission data collected through contact forms, which may include the submitters' personal information, in the database on the server that hosts the website.

Comparing to Alternatives

Flamingo is a free message-storage companion built primarily for Contact Form 7, whereas most alternatives listed focus on broader SMTP delivery and email logging across all WordPress mail functions. This makes direct comparison somewhat apples-to-oranges, though users evaluating message archiving options often weigh Flamingo against these email log tools.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Tight, native integration with Contact Form 7, making it a natural companion rather than a bolt-on tool
Simple, focused purpose: storing and reviewing submitted messages without complex setup
Free with no upsells or paywalled features
Long track record and wide install base among CF7 users

Weaknesses

Doesn't function as a general email log for SMTP-based mail delivery, limiting its usefulness outside Contact Form 7
Performance can degrade significantly as stored message volume grows
Lacks flexibility in contact management compared to dedicated email logging plugins

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.2/5 average from 121 ratings, sentiment leans positive overall—nearly 80% of reviewers give 4 or 5 stars—but a notable 13.2% land in the 1-2 star range, pointing to some real friction for a subset of users.

Positive highlights

"Doing it's job well" — Quentin Le Duff
"Really good for storing messages" — germanfriend
"This is a great tool, especially with its integration into the Contact Form 7 plugin" — allamehw
"Its a great addition to contact form 7 and much needed if you don't have your email server setup yet" — nolanrichardson

Common complaints

Noticeable slowdown in contact form submission times once the database accumulates a large number of stored records (e.g. 30k+)
Does not work with external SMTP-based mail setups, only PHP sendmail, meaning messages may not be captured at all
Contact Book feature only pulls from registered WP users, offering no way to manually add other addresses

Weaknesses

Two known vulnerabilities have been recorded historically (a contributor-level information disclosure and a CSV injection issue), both since patched
Performance concerns on high-volume sites suggest scalability isn't a strong point
Limited compatibility with sites using external SMTP services reduces its practical value for some setups

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Flamingo suits Contact Form 7 users who want a simple, free way to archive form submissions directly within WordPress without configuring a separate logging system. It's a good fit for smaller sites with modest submission volumes and straightforward PHP mail setups.

Not ideal for

Site owners relying on external SMTP services, expecting general email logging across all WordPress mail (not just CF7), or running high-traffic sites with large message archives may find Flamingo's performance and compatibility limitations frustrating. Keeping plugins updated is also advised given its past vulnerability history, though both issues have been fixed.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

Flamingo is entirely free and provides full message storage and management functionality for Contact Form 7 submissions, including a searchable message archive and basic contact book, with no feature restrictions.

Final Verdict

Flamingo remains a solid, no-cost solution for Contact Form 7 users who simply want submitted messages saved and organized within WordPress. Its 4.2-star rating and majority positive feedback reflect genuine usefulness for its core purpose, though the 13.2% of low-rated reviews highlight real limitations around performance at scale and incompatibility with external SMTP configurations.

For users needing broader email logging or SMTP-independent reliability, dedicated alternatives like WP Mail Logging or Email Log may be a better fit. Flamingo's past vulnerabilities have been resolved and its security risk score is low, but sites with heavy form traffic or non-standard mail setups should weigh its niche focus carefully before relying on it as their only message archive.
