Comparing to Alternatives

Layout Grid Block competes in a crowded field of Gutenberg grid and column plugins. It stands out for its flexibility as a replacement for the default columns block, though users have many other options depending on whether they prefer Bootstrap-based frameworks or lightweight alternatives.

Top alternatives

Strengths

More flexible than the standard core columns block, especially for responsive multi-column layouts
Simple to use for placing and resizing blocks
Backed by Automattic, lending some credibility and longevity
No known security vulnerabilities recorded

Weaknesses

Criticized for loading a large amount of unused CSS, impacting performance scores
Fewer built-in design options compared to some Bootstrap-based alternatives
Limited feature set compared to more actively developed grid builders

User Sentiment Analysis

With 13 total ratings, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with 92.3% of users awarding 5 stars and only one 1-star review (7.7%). The overall impression is a well-regarded, if lightly reviewed, block that satisfies most users' needs for flexible layouts.

Positive highlights

Rick Curran calls it 'a more flexible replacement for the standard columns block,' especially for responsive multi-column designs
leemon praises it as a 'great block' for placing and resizing blocks more flexibly than regular columns
boibox describes it as 'very helpful' and thanks the developers
Sunny says it's 'pretty great' and is keeping an eye on its future development
Hitesh simply calls it a 'good plugin' that's nice to use

Common complaints

Performance concerns, with one user reporting the plugin loads around 45KB of unused CSS classes, costing several Lighthouse points on mobile

Weaknesses

Performance overhead from unused CSS may affect page speed scores, as flagged by at least one user
Very small sample size of reviews (only 13 total) makes broader sentiment harder to confirm

Who Should Use This?

Best for

This plugin suits WordPress users who find the core columns block too rigid and want more flexibility for responsive, multi-column layouts without adding a full page builder. It's a good fit for those already using the block editor who want a lightweight upgrade to their layout options.

Not ideal for

Performance-sensitive site owners who closely monitor Lighthouse scores may want to test the plugin's CSS footprint first, as at least one user reported a notable increase in unused code. Those needing advanced grid features or extensive customization may find the feature set limited compared to more robust alternatives.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The plugin is entirely free and provides a flexible grid-based layout block as an alternative to the core columns block, with resizing and placement capabilities for responsive design.

Final Verdict

Layout Grid Block earns strong marks from its small but positive user base, who appreciate its flexibility over the standard columns block for building responsive layouts. With no recorded security vulnerabilities and backing from Automattic, it's a reasonably safe and capable choice for users wanting more layout control within the block editor.

That said, the one critical review raises a legitimate performance concern about unused CSS bloat, which prospective users should weigh, especially if page speed is a priority. Given the abundance of alternatives, from lightweight grid plugins to full Bootstrap-based systems, it's worth testing this plugin's impact on your specific site before committing, but for many, its flexibility and free price point make it a solid pick.
