What It Does

Firelight Lightbox, formerly known as Easy Fancybox, is the most popular lightbox plugin for WordPress, active on over 200,000 installations. It provides a lightweight and flexible lightbox for viewing images, videos, and other media on your website.

After activation, links to images, galleries, videos, PDFs, maps, and modals will open in a lightbox. You can find settings under 'Lightbox' in your main admin menu.

The free version includes automatic detection of images and galleries, customizable options for appearance and behavior, and support for various media formats. It also allows for easy modals and popup boxes, enhancing user engagement.

The Pro version offers additional features such as priority support, advanced customization options, and enhanced media handling capabilities. It is optimized for mobile devices and provides a modern user experience.

Comparing to Alternatives

Firelight Lightbox competes in a crowded field of WordPress lightbox plugins, many of which are lighter-weight or more narrowly focused. Its long track record and consistent updates set it apart from smaller, less-maintained alternatives.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Long-standing reputation with years of proven reliability
Broad format support for images, galleries, and video
Simple setup that works out of the box with minimal configuration
Actively maintained with regular security patches

Weaknesses

History of multiple stored XSS vulnerabilities, even if promptly patched
Some users want more granular control, such as per-instance overlay sizing

User Sentiment Analysis

With 359 ratings and a 4.8-star average, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive—90.8% of reviewers gave 5 stars, and only 3.1% left a 1 or 2 star rating. Recent reviews reinforce this, with users repeatedly praising the plugin's long-term reliability and simplicity.

Positive highlights

"Been using this for years. Works perfectly" — emediacy
"Works flawlessly for more than 5 years... Mad props to the developers" — beatty67
"Great WP plugin, versatile, reliable, have been using it for many years and never let me down" — Nur Muhammad
"Using it for several years without any troubles" — waweb
"At the moment, I haven't found a better plugin than this one" — eolekhnovich

Common complaints

Weaknesses

Repeated medium-severity stored XSS vulnerabilities affecting contributor and author-level accounts across multiple versions
Security risk score of 5/10 suggests a pattern of recurring issues rather than a single isolated flaw

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners who want a dependable, low-maintenance lightbox solution with a long history of stability and strong community trust. Ideal for sites where only trusted administrators or editors have publishing access.

Not ideal for

Sites with many contributor or author-level users who aren't fully trusted, given the plugin's recurring history of stored XSS vulnerabilities tied to those roles. Users needing advanced customization, like per-instance overlay sizing, may also find it limiting.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version offers full lightbox functionality for images, galleries, and video, with broad format support and straightforward setup—enough for most standard use cases without needing to upgrade.

Pro version (39 - 129 USD / year)

A premium version is available, typically offering additional customization options, extended support, and enhanced styling controls beyond what the free version provides.

Final Verdict

Firelight Lightbox enjoys strong user goodwill, backed by a 4.8-star average and years of consistent praise for reliability and ease of use. Long-time users frequently highlight its set-it-and-forget-it nature, and the near-total absence of negative reviews suggests the plugin does what it promises for the vast majority of sites.

However, its security history is a legitimate concern—seven recorded medium-severity XSS vulnerabilities over the years, several tied to contributor and author roles, indicate a pattern worth weighing carefully. For tightly controlled sites with trusted users, Firelight remains a solid, time-tested choice, especially given the number of less-established alternatives in this category. Sites with looser user permissions should stay diligent about updates or consider alternatives with cleaner security records.
