Great plugin and great team
This is a plugin I’ve been using for years because it’s always performed better than its competitors.Furthermore, the support (even here on the free WordPress forum) has always been responsive and available.(Some paid software often isn’t as good at providing this type of support.)I’d also like to point out that the various negative reviews were caused by the drastic interface change a few months ago, which, however, didn’t affect the plugin’s functionality.Unfortunately, without changes, there’s no evolution. And the developers have taken the risk of changing to evolve and improve the plugin, with excellent and evident results.

Sadly Has Become Unusable
I’ve used this plugin for years in 50+ client projects. Unfortunately, since the revamp (v5) in February 2025 it has turned into a usability nightmare. The intentions behind the changes were probably good… maybe to make the tool more accessible for non-technical users? But the execution is a disaster. The developers opted for many non-standard interaction patterns—likely to give the tool a more ‘app-like’ feel. The result is that it now feels like an unpredictable alien element within the WordPress installation. I held back this review for half a year and really tried to stick with BackWPup. But in the end, it has become so cumbersome for me that I’m switching to another solution.

WARNING – CHECK YOUR INSTALLATIONS!!!
When the makers of this plugin removed the old job system and moved to the new version of the plugin and everything broke your old backups, they automatically enabled backups getting uploaded to your server in .tar format. These are in the /wp-content/uploads/backwpup/xxxxxxx/backups folder and are set to run every month. We’ve NEVER had backups set to upload to our own server, let alone into folders of the actual website. We discovered over 100GB of backup files across a lot of different sites. This plugin maker is reckless.

nice ux, simple customisation
i have been using backwpup for many years and have always loved its easy handling. there were some quirks in the beginning after the relaunch but they seem to be mastered now. when i had some issues, support was always fast, friendly and constructive.

BackWPup IS BACK!
I’ve been using BackWPup for many years now, and it has always been one of my essential WordPress plugins. I’ll be honest: the transition to version 5 was difficult, and I did experience some issues at that time. But I’m really happy to say that today, the plugin is once again fully stable and working perfectly in my setups. What impresses me the most is how the support team handled this whole period. They didn’t just push updates blindly — they actually listened to our feedback, took our problems seriously, and worked hard to improve and stabilize the plugin step by step. You can really feel that they care about their users and about the long-term quality of the project. I’m now confident again recommending BackWPup for reliable backups, and I want to sincerely thank the whole team for the work they’ve done and for listening to us.

It doesn’t work
I stopped using the plugin due to the issues with a previous update, since those issues have been sorted, I reactivated it and updated it, and I really wish I didn’t. What happened to it? The old plugin was way better. This version gives absolutely no feedback whether anything is happening or not. Since my old backup jobs are in limbo somewhere, I tried to create a new backup job using FTP. I put in the FTP details and hit Test and Continue. Is there supposed to be something to show me if the connection is working or not? or do I just have to guess? So, to test the connection in a more practical way, I ran the backup.. did the backup fail, did it run.. I don’t know, because there is absolutely no feedback from the plugin to tell me.I had this plugin on about 50 clients websites, and it used to be an amazing plugin to work with, particularly for triggering backups remotely from my custom WordPress management system that I built. I am now installing Updraft on all sites and using that instead. If you guys do happen to revert your plugin back to the way it was, I would not hesitate to use it again, and install it on all my clients site, some of which had their own paid licenses.

You have ruined a brilliant plugin
What have you done? You’ve ruined what was a brilliant plugin. There is now a horrible wizard and despite all my attempts I just cannot get it work.I implore you to revert to how it worked originally otherwise you will get more appalling reviews.
