What It Does

Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) transforms WordPress into a comprehensive content management system by providing tools to manage data effectively.

The ACF plugin gives you complete control over WordPress edit screens, custom field data, and more.

With the ACF field builder, adding fields to WordPress edit screens is quick and easy. You can add simple fields like an 'author' field or more complex fields for structured data needs.

Fields can be added across various WordPress elements, including posts, pages, users, and custom options pages, making it simple to enhance the content creation experience.

ACF also allows you to display custom field values in any theme template file using developer-friendly functions, making it easy to manage content presentation.

Creating new custom post types and taxonomies is also streamlined within the ACF interface, enhancing your content modeling workflow without needing additional plugins.

ACF is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, ensuring that content creators can work efficiently while adhering to accessibility standards.

With over a decade of community contributions and extensive documentation, ACF provides the guidance needed for developers to create custom solutions.

Comparing to Alternatives

ACF is the long-standing benchmark for custom fields on WordPress, but the fork of Secure Custom Fields and several mature competitors give users real choices, especially for those who want everything free or prefer a different data model.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Extremely mature, battle-tested field builder used across a huge share of professional WordPress projects
Strong developer ecosystem, documentation, and template functions built up over more than a decade
Also handles custom post types and taxonomies, reducing the need for extra plugins
Pro tier adds options pages, repeater/flexible content fields, and gallery fields that speed up complex builds

Weaknesses

Some advanced features (options pages, repeaters, blocks) are locked behind a recurring paid license
Free alternatives like Secure Custom Fields or Pods offer overlapping functionality without a subscription
Long vulnerability history means sites must stay diligent about updates

User Sentiment Analysis

With 1,438 ratings, ACF sits at 4.5/5 overall, and the distribution is heavily skewed positive: 84% of reviewers give 5 stars. However, the 11.5% share of 1-star reviews is notable and largely tied to licensing frustrations and the recent ownership dispute rather than core functionality.

Positive highlights

"This is the plugin that takes your site from a 0 to 1... Start with the free version and once you've got a handle, upgrade to the Pro" — whiteelephantagency
"In my career as a dev, this plugin has not once let us down. It never breaks or cause any issues." — iedmdev001
"It's reliable, flexible, and makes managing custom fields super easy." — tx28z
"They've continued expanding and improving it and now it also does CPTs and taxonomies — I'm super impressed" — Karen Dimmick
"Changing my review to 5 stars since SCF is gone and ACF is back" — cXD4931

Common complaints

Frustration that security-relevant updates feel tied to paying for a license, which some see as a safety risk for unpatched sites
Anger that once-free functionality (like options pages or advanced fields) now effectively requires a subscription, pushing users toward free forks like Secure Custom Fields
Reports of a long-standing ACF Blocks/Patterns editing bug going unaddressed for months with no clear fix or timeline

Weaknesses

A lengthy history of 17 recorded vulnerabilities, including a high-severity reflected XSS and a medium-severity admin+ remote code execution issue
Recent 2026 vulnerabilities (unauthenticated post/field modification) show the plugin still requires prompt patching
Perceived slow response to some bug reports, per user complaints about the Patterns editing issue

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Developers and agencies building custom WordPress sites who need a proven, flexible field system with strong documentation and community support. It suits users comfortable investing in a Pro license for repeaters, options pages, and galleries, and who will keep the plugin diligently updated.

Not ideal for

Budget-conscious users who want all premium-style features for free, or anyone uncomfortable with the plugin's sizeable vulnerability history, may prefer a fully free alternative like Secure Custom Fields or Pods. Site owners who can't guarantee prompt updates should also weigh the security track record carefully.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version covers standard custom field types, field groups, and basic custom post type/taxonomy creation, enough for many straightforward sites without any payment.

Pro version (49 - 249 USD / year)

ACF PRO unlocks repeater and flexible content fields, options pages, gallery fields, ACF Blocks for the block editor, and priority support, sold via annual license renewal required to keep receiving updates.

Final Verdict

Advanced Custom Fields remains a dominant, well-regarded tool for structuring WordPress content, backed by overwhelmingly positive ratings and over a decade of real-world use. But the sizeable minority of 1-star reviews points to genuine friction: licensing model complaints, the fallout from the Secure Custom Fields dispute, and slow responses to some reported bugs.

Its long vulnerability history, including recent 2026 issues, means updates must be applied promptly, which is complicated for some by the paid-license update model. Users who value maturity and ecosystem support will likely find ACF worth the cost, while those seeking a fully free, actively maintained option should seriously consider Secure Custom Fields or Pods as alternatives.
