What It Does

Custom Post Type UI provides an easy-to-use interface for registering and managing custom post types and taxonomies for your website.

CPTUI helps create custom content types, but displaying that content can be a whole new challenge. Custom Post Type UI Extended was created to help with displaying your crafted content. View our Layouts page to see available layout examples with Custom Post Type UI Extended.

Comparing to Alternatives

Custom Post Type UI sits in a crowded field of post-type builders, but it remains one of the most established and widely trusted options thanks to its long track record and pairing with field plugins like ACF.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Simple, no-code interface for registering custom post types and taxonomies
Long-standing reputation and years of proven reliability
Plays well alongside field plugins like ACF instead of trying to replace them
Lightweight and free with no upsell pressure
Actively maintained with regular updates

Weaknesses

Doesn't handle front-end display of custom post types, requiring theme code or another plugin
No built-in custom fields functionality, so users need a companion plugin
Some users expecting an all-in-one no-code solution may find the scope limited

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.6/5 average from 276 ratings and over 85% of reviewers awarding 5 stars, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive. Only 7.2% of reviews fall into the 1-2 star range, suggesting the plugin reliably meets expectations for its core purpose.

Positive highlights

Kabook calls it 'the standard for managing post types in WordPress' and praises its ability to extend WordPress without complex code
saksaksak values it as a 'no-nonsense tool' that's 'proven with years' and avoids vendor lock-in compared to ACF's CPT features
sonofbruce says simply, 'Couldn't live without it'
hohumtiddleypom appreciates that the UI removes the need to write PHP for every post type edit
letharaddison highlights the clean, bloat-free interface that 'gets the job done right'

Common complaints

Frustration that the plugin only registers post types and doesn't handle front-end display without additional PHP or theme work

Weaknesses

History of four low-severity vulnerabilities, including stored XSS and unauthenticated modification issues, though all have been patched
Requires supplementary coding or theme knowledge to actually display custom post type content
A small but vocal minority find the learning curve steeper than expected for non-developers

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Developers and site builders who want a fast, reliable, no-code way to register custom post types and taxonomies, especially those who prefer pairing it with a dedicated fields plugin like ACF rather than an all-in-one solution.

Not ideal for

Complete beginners expecting a fully visual, code-free experience for displaying content on the front end, since some theme or template editing is still required. Security-conscious users should also ensure they're running the latest version given the plugin's history of patched low-severity vulnerabilities.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The entire plugin is free and provides full functionality for registering and managing custom post types and taxonomies through an admin interface, with no artificial feature limits.

Final Verdict

Custom Post Type UI earns its strong reputation through simplicity, reliability, and years of consistent performance, reflected in its 4.6-star rating and overwhelmingly positive reviews. Its narrow but well-executed focus on registering post types and taxonomies makes it a natural companion to field plugins like ACF, rather than a competitor to broader tools like Pods.

The plugin's patched vulnerability history is worth noting but not alarming, given the low severity and prompt fixes. For anyone wanting a free, no-nonsense way to manage post types without diving into PHP, it remains one of the safest and most proven choices in its category, provided users pair it with the right tools for front-end display.
