What It Does

WP-Sweep is a powerful plugin designed to clean up your WordPress database by removing unused, orphaned, and duplicated data. It efficiently optimizes database tables, ensuring your site runs smoothly.

This plugin targets various types of data, including revisions, auto drafts, deleted comments, unapproved comments, spam comments, and more. It also handles orphaned post meta, comment meta, user meta, and term meta, making it comprehensive in its cleanup capabilities.

WP-Sweep utilizes WordPress's built-in delete functions instead of direct MySQL queries, ensuring safety and reliability. You can also access its features via REST API endpoints and WP-CLI commands for greater flexibility in managing your database.

Comparing to Alternatives

WP-Sweep sits in a crowded field of database cleanup and revision management tools, but it stands out for handling a broad range of cleanup tasks in one place rather than focusing on a single niche like revisions or transients alone.

Top alternatives

Lightweight and reported to work reliably even on large databases

Weaknesses

More narrowly focused alternatives (like dedicated revision or transient cleaners) may offer more granular control for specific tasks

Best for

WP-Sweep is ideal for site owners and developers who want a straightforward, no-frills way to clean up post revisions, trashed content, spam comments, and unused metadata without worrying about licensing fees or complicated setup. It's particularly well suited to those managing multiple WordPress sites who value tools built on native WordPress functions for safety.

FAQ

It is still under Tools, but the address changed from tools.php?page=wp-sweep/admin.php to tools.php?page=wp-sweep. Update any bookmark.

The old address was the legacy “plugin file as menu slug” form, which put the plugin’s installation directory name into the page URL. That is also why the screen used to break for anyone who installed WP-Sweep under a different directory name — renamed by hand, or unzipped as wp-sweep-2.0.0. Neither happens now.

Four per-type filters take a list of meta keys that must never be deleted, and each supports * as a wildcard:

add_filter( 'wp_sweep_postmeta_whitelist', function ( $keys ) {     $keys[] = '_my_plugin_setting';     $keys[] = '_acme_*';     return $keys; } );

The same applies to wp_sweep_commentmeta_whitelist, wp_sweep_usermeta_whitelist and wp_sweep_termmeta_whitelist. Terms are protected with wp_sweep_excluded_termids, and taxonomies are kept out of the orphaned term relationships sweep with wp_sweep_excluded_taxonomies.

In 2.0.0 these lists also protect the duplicated meta sweeps, which the documentation always said they did and the code never did.
