What It Does

WP-PageNavi allows you to replace the default older and newer post links with advanced page links for better navigation.

This plugin provides the wp_pagenavi() template tag, which generates stylish pagination links that enhance user experience.

To use it, simply replace the calls to next_posts_link() and previous_posts_link() in your theme with wp_pagenavi(). You can also configure the plugin settings in the WP-Admin area.

For customization, you can modify the CSS styles by copying the pagenavi-css.css file to your theme's directory or by adjusting the styles directly in your theme's style.css file.

WP-PageNavi also supports filters for changing default class names assigned to pagination elements, allowing for further customization.

Comparing to Alternatives

WP-PageNavi is a long-standing pagination plugin focused on giving readers numbered page links instead of simple next/previous buttons. It competes with a range of posts-per-page and pagination tools, though most alternatives focus on controlling post counts rather than navigation display itself.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Long track record of stable, reliable performance across many sites
Simple, lightweight implementation that's easy to integrate into themes
Highly rated by a large user base with minimal complaints
Free with no upsell pressure or feature paywalls

Weaknesses

Interface and styling feel dated compared to newer pagination plugins
Can conflict with themes or post types when URL slugs overlap
Lacks built-in advanced customization found in some modern alternatives

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.7/5 average from 149 ratings, WP-PageNavi enjoys strong approval, with over 85% of users giving it 5 stars. Only 6% of reviews fall into the 1-2 star range, and notably no specific negative reviews were left explaining those low scores, suggesting the plugin performs consistently well for most use cases.

Fixes require manual troubleshooting since the plugin doesn't flag this issue automatically

Who Should Use This?

Best for

WP-PageNavi suits site owners who want reliable, numbered pagination for blogs, archives, or custom post type listings without needing a paid solution. It's a solid pick for anyone running a content-heavy site who wants proven, low-maintenance navigation.

Not ideal for

Users with complex custom post type structures should double-check for slug conflicts before relying on this plugin. Those wanting deep customization of posts-per-page logic or modern styling out of the box may prefer a more specialized alternative.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version provides complete pagination functionality, including numbered page links, customizable text for navigation elements, and theme integration—everything most sites need for standard pagination.

Final Verdict

WP-PageNavi has earned its strong 4.7-star reputation through years of reliable service, a clean feature set, and zero recorded security vulnerabilities. The near-total absence of detailed negative reviews, despite a small 6% low-rating share, suggests the plugin does its job well for the vast majority of users without major frustration.

Given its free pricing, proven track record, and clean security history, WP-PageNavi remains a dependable choice for straightforward pagination needs. Users with more complex site architectures should watch for the known slug-conflict issue, but otherwise this plugin offers excellent value with minimal risk compared to alternatives in its category.

FAQ

Make sure your host is running PHP 5. The only foolproof way to do this is to add this line to wp-config.php (after the opening <?php tag):

var_dump(PHP_VERSION);

If you are running a multi-language plugin, you will probably want to ignore the strings in the options page.

You can do that like so:

<?php wp_pagenavi( array( 'options' => WP_PageNavi_Options::defaults() ) ); ?>

Before 3.0.0 this was written as PageNavi_Core::$options->get_defaults(). That property was backed by the bundled SCB framework, which 3.0.0 removes, so the old form no longer works and must be updated.
