What It Does

WP Crontrol enables you to take control of the scheduled cron events on your WordPress website or WooCommerce store. You can view all scheduled cron events along with their arguments, schedule, and callback functions.

You can edit, delete, pause, resume, and immediately run cron events. Additionally, you can add new cron events, bulk delete cron events, and manage custom cron schedules.

WP Crontrol is aware of timezones and will alert you to events that have no actions or that have missed their schedule. It provides a user-friendly interface for managing cron events without needing to write any code.

Comparing to Alternatives

WP Crontrol is widely regarded as the go-to tool for viewing and managing WordPress cron jobs, but it competes with several lighter-weight or monitoring-focused plugins that approach cron management from different angles.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Provides a clear, comprehensive interface to view, add, edit, run, and delete cron events
Trusted by developers for debugging plugin and theme scheduling conflicts
Lightweight and focused, without unnecessary bloat
Backed by a well-documented companion website with troubleshooting guidance
Long track record and strong reputation within the WordPress community

Weaknesses

Has had multiple security vulnerabilities disclosed over its history, including a recent SSRF issue
Some users report leftover errors or incomplete cleanup after uninstalling
Occasional site-specific issues with deleting cron events, though often resolved by hosting environment fixes

User Sentiment Analysis

With 165 ratings, WP Crontrol holds a strong 4.5/5 average, driven by an overwhelming 85.5% five-star share. However, a notable 12.7% one-star segment suggests a small but vocal group encountering specific technical issues.

Positive highlights

"Always use this plugin to debug my cron jobs. It's extremely simple and easy to use." — eLmore
"WP Crontrol is an essential tool if you want complete control over the cron jobs on your WordPress site... The interface is clear and simple." — MCD Diseño Web
"This plugin is obviously written by a very thoughtful and competent author. It just works, unobtrusive and very easy UI." — Tim Reeves
"It was not until I installed WPCron did I learn that Elementor was running one particular Cron job that was completely unrelated... eye opening." — orangeracoon
"I can do all these things on my site's backend without having to mess with databases." — Anonymous User

Common complaints

Cron event deletion not working as expected on some sites, though attributed to site-specific issues rather than the plugin itself
Uninstalling the plugin can leave behind an error message referencing every installed plugin

Weaknesses

Three known vulnerabilities have been disclosed over the plugin's lifetime, including a 2025 admin-level SSRF flaw and a 2024 remote code execution issue, both since patched
A small subset of users report cleanup or deletion problems that can be confusing without developer support
No built-in monitoring or alerting for missed or failed cron jobs beyond manual inspection

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Developers, site administrators, and technically inclined users who need visibility into WordPress cron jobs for debugging performance issues, plugin conflicts, or scheduling problems. It's especially valuable for anyone troubleshooting mysterious site slowdowns or rendering issues tied to background tasks.

Not ideal for

Less technical users uncomfortable with direct cron manipulation, or sites with strict security policies that are cautious about plugins with a history of disclosed vulnerabilities, particularly given the past RCE and SSRF issues. Keeping the plugin updated promptly is essential for this group.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version offers full functionality: viewing, adding, editing, running, and deleting cron events, along with PHP cron event support and detailed scheduling controls, making it a complete solution without limitations.

Final Verdict

WP Crontrol earns its strong reputation through a clean, functional interface that gives site owners real visibility into WordPress's often opaque cron system. The overwhelmingly positive reviews reflect genuine appreciation from developers and site owners who've used it to solve real performance and scheduling mysteries, and the fact that it remains entirely free with no upsell pressure adds to its appeal.

That said, its disclosed vulnerability history, including a 2025 SSRF flaw and a 2024 RCE issue, means administrators should treat prompt updates as non-negotiable. Combined with a competitive field of alternatives offering similar or more specialized cron management features, WP Crontrol remains a solid choice for technically capable users who stay on top of updates, but it warrants a bit more security vigilance than its rating alone might suggest.

FAQ

Yes, it’s actively tested and working up to PHP 8.4.

There are two steps to getting a functioning cron event that executes regularly. The first step is telling WordPress about the hook. This is the part that WP Crontrol was created to provide. The second step is calling a function when your hook is executed.

Step One: Adding the event

From the Tools Cron Events menu, click on Add Cron Event. Fill out the details of the event. You’re best off using a hook name that conforms to normal PHP variable naming conventions. The schedule is how often the event will be executed. If you don’t see a good interval, then add one in the Settings Cron Schedules menu.

Step Two: Writing the function

This part takes place in PHP code (for example, in the functions.php file from your theme). To execute your hook, WordPress runs an action. For this reason, we need to tell WordPress which function to execute when this action is run. The following line accomplishes that:

add_action( 'my_hookname', 'my_function' );

The next step is to write your function. Here’s a simple example:

function my_function() {     wp_mail( '[email protected]', 'WP Crontrol', 'WP Crontrol rocks!' ); }
