What It Does

WP Consent API is a plugin that standardizes the communication of accepted consent categories between plugins. It requires a cookie banner plugin and at least one other plugin that supports the WP Consent API.

With this plugin, all supporting plugins can use the same set of methods to read and register the current consent category, allowing consent management plugins and other plugins to work together, improving compliance with privacy laws.

WARNING: the plugin itself will not handle consent. It will show you how many plugins you have without Consent API support and will improve compliance on your site by ensuring smooth communication between cookie banner plugins and plugins that set cookies or track user data.

Comparing to Alternatives

WP Consent API occupies a unique niche as an interoperability standard rather than a feature-rich consent tool itself, so it has no close direct competitor in this category. Its value comes from acting as a shared communication layer between other plugins, such as cookie banners and analytics tools.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Lightweight, standardized API for consent management across plugins and themes
No known security vulnerabilities recorded in WPScan
Positively reviewed for both functionality and support responsiveness
Encourages consistent compliance handling across the WordPress ecosystem

Weaknesses

Very small sample size of reviews makes broader trends hard to confirm
Relies on other plugins adopting the API to be fully useful

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Developers and site owners who use multiple consent-related plugins (cookie banners, analytics, marketing tools) and want them to communicate consent status consistently. It's especially useful for those building compliant, multi-plugin consent workflows.

Not ideal for

Site owners looking for a standalone, user-facing consent banner or cookie management solution, since this plugin functions as a background API rather than an end-user interface.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The plugin is fully free and provides its complete functionality: a standardized API that lets other plugins read and share consent status, improving compliance consistency across a WordPress site.

Final Verdict

WP Consent API fills a specific, useful role by standardizing how consent is communicated between plugins, and the limited feedback available is uniformly positive, praising both its functionality and support. With zero known vulnerabilities and a clean security history, it's a low-risk addition to a privacy-conscious WordPress setup.

Because it has no direct alternatives and isn't meant to be a standalone consent solution, its value depends heavily on other plugins supporting the same API. For developers and site owners building compliant, multi-tool consent workflows, it's a sensible, trustworthy choice, though the small review count means it's still building a track record.
