What It Does

Redux was built by developers for developers. We save you months if not years in your development time. Everything we do is to help innovation in the industry.

Redux is a simple, genuinely extensible, and fully responsive options framework for WordPress themes and plugins. Built on the WordPress Settings API; Redux supports many field types, custom error handling, custom fields and validation types, and import/export functionality.

Redux simplifies the development cycle by providing a streamlined, extensible framework for developers to build on. Through a simple, well-documented config file, third-party developers can build out an options panel limited only by their imagination in a fraction of the time it would take to build from the ground up!

Redux offers a variety of fields including Accordion, ACE Editor, Background, Border, Button Set, Checkbox, Color, Date, Dimensions, Gallery, Google Maps, Image Select, Slider, Typography, and more. It also includes features like full value escaping, field validation, and CSS output generation.

For documentation and support, visit the extensive docs at devs.redux.io. You can also contribute code via the GitHub Repository. Redux does not interact with end users on your website and requires a config file provided by a third-party theme or plugin developer to function.

Comparing to Alternatives

Redux Framework is a long-standing option builder used heavily by theme developers to power extensive customization panels. It competes with a range of custom fields and options frameworks that vary in complexity, from lightweight developer toolkits to more visual builders.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Extremely feature-rich options framework with a huge range of field types
Widely adopted by theme developers, so many themes already integrate it out of the box
Free to use despite offering functionality comparable to premium frameworks
Mature and flexible enough to handle complex theme option panels

Weaknesses

History of multiple security vulnerabilities, including a critical privilege escalation flaw
Some users report it can add noticeable overhead to site performance
Translation handling can be inconsistent with certain WordPress versions

User Sentiment Analysis

With 273 ratings and an overall score of 4.4/5, sentiment leans strongly positive, with 82% of reviewers giving 5 stars. However, a notable 14.7% left 1-2 star reviews, indicating a vocal minority experiencing more serious problems.

Positive highlights

"Insane!! Advanced Features given for free" — sone234 praises the generous feature set typically reserved for premium products
"Pretty Solid Framework" — Rena notes it's flexible and easy to use once you learn it
"Highly Appreciate" — Anil Chandra Robidas thanks the developers for a great plugin
"Good framework" — erictyl offers a simple but positive endorsement
"Great plugin!" — Irina calls it excellent and useful

Common complaints

Significant negative impact on site loading times and overall performance, as reported when used with the Travelista theme

Weaknesses

A history of five recorded vulnerabilities, including a critical CVSS 9 privilege escalation issue affecting versions before 4.5.13
Repeated XSS-related flaws across different versions suggest recurring security oversight
Performance concerns raised by at least one user, despite the framework's broad feature set

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Theme and plugin developers who need a robust, no-cost options framework with extensive field types and flexibility, particularly when working with themes that already integrate Redux, will find it a capable and proven solution.

Not ideal for

Site owners who prioritize security hardening or lightweight performance may want to think twice, given the framework's history of serious vulnerabilities, including a critical privilege escalation bug, and occasional reports of slower load times.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version offers a comprehensive options framework with extensive field types and customization capabilities, effectively matching functionality found in many premium alternatives.

Final Verdict

Redux Framework remains a popular choice among theme developers thanks to its extensive free feature set and flexibility, reflected in a strong 4.4/5 rating and an overwhelming majority of 5-star reviews. However, its track record includes several notable vulnerabilities, most seriously a critical privilege escalation flaw patched in version 4.5.13, which should give security-conscious users pause.

For developers who keep the plugin updated and need a mature, no-cost options framework, Redux still delivers strong value compared to alternatives like Meta Box or CMB2. But given the recurring pattern of security issues and occasional performance complaints, users should ensure they're always running the latest version and weigh their risk tolerance before committing to it for sensitive or high-traffic projects.

Redux is an option framework… in other words, it’s not designed to do anything on its own! You can, however, activate a demo mode to see how it works.
