What It Does

Generate and setup a favicon for desktop browsers, iPhone/iPad, Android devices, Windows 8 tablets and more. In a matter of seconds, design an icon that looks great on all major platforms.

Favicon is not just a single favicon.ico file dropped in the middle of your site. Nowadays, with so many different platforms and devices, you need a bunch of pictures to get the job done. With RealFaviconGenerator, generate all the icons you need for desktop browsers, iPhone/iPad, Android devices, Windows 8 devices, and more.

iOS devices use a high resolution Apple touch icon to illustrate bookmarks and home screen shortcuts. A first generation iPhone needs a 57x57 picture, whereas a brand new iPad with Retina screen looks for a 152x152 picture. Android Chrome also uses these pictures if it finds them. Windows 8 takes another route with a dedicated set of icons and HTML declarations.

Favicon is not only a matter of pictures with different resolutions. The various platforms come with different UI guidelines. For example, the classic desktop favicons often use transparency. But iOS requires opaque icons. And Windows 8 has its own recommendations.

Save hours of research and image edition with RealFaviconGenerator and its companion plugin. In a matter of seconds, you setup a favicon compatible with:

Windows (IE, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari), Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Camino), iOS (Safari, Chrome, Coast), Android (Chrome, Firefox), Surface (IE), and more.

We take compatibility very seriously. See http://realfavicongenerator.net/favicon_compatibility for the full list.

Comparing to Alternatives

Favicon by RealFaviconGenerator is a well-established favicon tool with a strong reputation, but it competes in a crowded field of simpler, single-purpose favicon plugins.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Automatically generates favicons for all major platforms and devices, not just a single icon size
Real-time previews across browsers, apps, and devices simplify setup
Consistently rated near-perfect by a large user base
Simple, quick setup praised repeatedly by reviewers

Weaknesses

Has a documented history of multiple XSS vulnerabilities across several versions
Some lighter alternatives may offer a smaller footprint for users who just need a basic favicon

User Sentiment Analysis

With 801 ratings and a 4.9/5 average, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with 97.9% of users awarding 5 stars and only 1.1% leaving a 1 or 2 star rating.

Positive highlights

"Perfect, easy and quick" — VIDEGRAIN
"Works great" — ixian
"The setup was simple, and it was very good" — kazuo210
"I just love how it does all the legwork for me" — kurtkevin

Common complaints

Favicon fails to update after uploading a new one, continuing to display the original image (VictorJSanz)

Weaknesses

A history of four known vulnerabilities, including two high-severity XSS issues, raises security concerns for a plugin handling file uploads
At least one user reported the core favicon-updating function not working as expected

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners who want a thorough, automated favicon solution that covers all devices and platforms with minimal manual configuration, and who keep plugins updated promptly.

Not ideal for

Users who are not diligent about applying updates should be cautious, given the plugin's history of high-severity XSS vulnerabilities; those needing only a very basic single-icon favicon might prefer a lighter-weight alternative.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free plugin provides full favicon generation and management for all major browsers, devices, and platforms, with real-time previews, at no cost.

Final Verdict

Favicon by RealFaviconGenerator enjoys strong, near-universal praise from its user base, with reviewers consistently highlighting its ease of use, speed, and thoroughness in generating favicons across platforms. Complaints are rare, with only a single upload-related issue surfacing among negative reviews.

However, the plugin's security history is worth noting, with four recorded vulnerabilities including two high-severity XSS flaws, the most recent fixed in 2026. As long as users keep the plugin updated, it remains a solid, free choice for comprehensive favicon management, though those prioritizing security history above all else may want to weigh lighter alternatives.
