What It Does

Breeze is a free, simple (yet powerful) and user-friendly WordPress Caching Plugin developed by the Cloudways team. It offers various options to optimize WordPress performance at various levels. It works equally great with WordPress, WordPress with WooCommerce and WordPress Multisite.

Breeze excels in the following areas:

Performance: Breeze improves website speed and resource optimization. Other features include file level cache system, database cleanup, minification, support for Varnish cache and simplified CDN integration options.

Convenience: Breeze is easy to install and configure directly from WordPress. Configuring Breeze is easy and most of the default options work well right out of the box. The recommended settings should work on all your WordPress websites seamlessly.

Simplicity: Breeze is designed to be simple for all users. Just install and activate the plugin and you'll see the results instantaneously.

What makes Breeze WordPress Cache Plugin awesome is that it comes with builtin support for Varnish. If Varnish is not installed on your servers, Breeze will utilize its internal cache mechanism to boost up your WordPress site performance.

FEATURES

Seamless integration with Varnish Cache for efficient content delivery. No manual adjustments needed – all settings come pre-configured for your convenience.

Optimize performance using Cloudflare's caching capabilities. No specific Breeze configurations are needed – it works out of the box.

Effortlessly integrate your preferred Content Delivery Network (CDN) for global content distribution with Breeze instead of using the CDN providers' plugins.

Trim WordPress database bloat effortlessly. Breeze's Database Options optimize and declutter your database, boosting performance by removing unneeded data like post revisions and trashed content.

Take command over caching exclusions. With Breeze, you have the power to prevent specific URLs, JS files, and CSS files from being cached.

Achieve smaller page sizes and faster load times through HTML, CSS, and JavaScript minification, including inline CSS and JavaScript minification.

Load images when they're visible, not all at once, for faster webpage performance by implementing lazy loading for images.

Load JS files with deferred loading, enhancing overall performance.

Supercharge your site's speed with Breeze's advanced preloading features: load fonts early, quicken link clicks, and enhance DNS requests for a seamless user experience.

Master real-time interactions with Breeze's Heartbeat API management. Fine-tune notifications, sales data, autosaves, and more to optimize WordPress performance by adjusting API call frequencies.

Comparing to Alternatives

Breeze competes in a crowded caching space dominated by established names like WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, and LiteSpeed Cache, alongside modern all-in-one optimizers. Its appeal lies in simplicity and being built with Cloudways hosting in mind, though its security track record and mixed compatibility reports are worth weighing against alternatives.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Simple, uncluttered interface praised by users who dislike overly complex cache settings
Reliable Varnish cache purging, noted as better than some third-party alternatives
Preload Links feature that pre-caches pages on hover for faster perceived load times
Responsive support team frequently highlighted for quick fixes

Weaknesses

Long history of security vulnerabilities, including a critical unauthenticated file upload flaw
Compatibility issues reported with WPML multicurrency and WooCommerce mini-cart caching
Leftover files reported after uninstallation by at least one user

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 3.6/5 rating from 126 reviews, sentiment is polarized: nearly 58% of users give 5 stars, but over a third (35.7%) leave 1 or 2 star reviews, suggesting a plugin that works very well for some setups but causes real frustration for others.

Positive highlights

robmaric praised support for fixing an issue within 24 hours
PthPndr switched from WP Rocket and found Breeze's Varnish purging more reliable, calling it a top-tier tool
baraklevy called it 'a must-have plugin' and praised support agent Muhammad for going above and beyond
cwanasmoiz highlighted the Preload Links feature for speeding up page loads
Chris Huber, a Cloudways user running Breeze on 10+ sites, said the plugin's rating is 'too low' given how solid it is

Common complaints

Plugin leaves behind leftover files/data after uninstallation
Incompatibility with WPML multicurrency switcher when users are logged out, an issue reportedly unresolved for at least two years

Weaknesses

Notable history of security vulnerabilities, including a critical (CVSS 10) unauthenticated arbitrary file upload flaw and a high-severity stored XSS issue
Reports of unresolved compatibility problems with third-party plugins like WPML
High proportion of 1-2 star reviews (35.7%) indicates inconsistent experiences across different site configurations

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Breeze suits users who want a straightforward, no-frills caching plugin, especially those hosted on Cloudways where it's designed to integrate well with Varnish. It's a good fit for site owners who value simplicity and responsive support over an extensive feature set.

Not ideal for

Not ideal for sites running WPML multicurrency or complex WooCommerce setups, given documented compatibility issues. Security-conscious users should also note the plugin's history of 11 known vulnerabilities, including a critical file upload flaw, and should ensure they're always running the latest patched version.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

Breeze is fully free and includes core caching features such as page caching, Varnish purging, minification, and preload links, offering solid value with no feature gating.

Final Verdict

Breeze delivers genuine value for users seeking a simple, effective caching solution, with many praising its speed improvements, reliable Varnish handling, and responsive support team. However, the polarized rating distribution and documented compatibility problems with WPML and WooCommerce suggest it doesn't work smoothly for every setup.

The plugin's security history is a real concern, with 11 known vulnerabilities including a critical unauthenticated file upload flaw patched only recently. Users should keep it updated diligently. Given strong competition from alternatives like LiteSpeed Cache and WP Fastest Cache, Breeze is a reasonable free choice for straightforward sites, particularly on Cloudways, but those with complex plugin stacks or heightened security needs may want to evaluate alternatives first.
