What It Does

This plugin implements the automatic creation of alt text for images uploaded to the media library. The alt text is generated at the time of uploading the image and it is also possible to generate the alt text for images already present in the media library.

To generate the alt text, you can choose to use the artificial intelligence of OpenAI or Azure, or decide if you simply want to copy the title of the article where the image is uploaded or the name of the image.

Clearly, using artificial intelligence will allow for more accurate and useful alt texts.

This plugin allows you to generate alt texts in various ways, including using OpenAI APIs, Anthropic Claude API, or Azure APIs for computational vision. You can also recover the title of the image or the title of the article in which the image is uploaded.

After installing the plugin, click on the 'Auto Alt Text' menu item to get started. Select your preferred generation method and configure your API keys as needed.

Once the plugin is configured, each time an image is uploaded to the media library, an alt text will be automatically set based on the selected generation method. For images already in the media library, you can create bulk alt texts or generate alt text for a single image directly.

This plugin uses external services like OpenAI and Azure, and it is recommended to check their privacy policies and terms of use for accurate information on data handling.

Final Verdict

Auto Alt Text is a highly effective and well-received plugin for automatically generating image alt text using AI, praised for its simplicity and customization options. It offers excellent value as a free plugin with no paid tier, making it accessible to a wide range of users.

However, some users may find the lack of a queue system and minor interface issues limiting, and the plugin's history of a medium-level security vulnerability, though fixed, should be considered. Overall, it is a strong choice for those needing reliable alt text automation with AI integration.
