What It Does

The official AMP plugin for WordPress is designed to improve page experience by automating the generation of AMP-valid markup. It integrates seamlessly with your existing WordPress themes and plugins, allowing you to enhance your site's performance effortlessly.

This plugin provides effective validation tools to help users address any AMP incompatibilities, ensuring a smoother experience. It supports various template modes, enabling site owners to choose how they want to serve AMP pages.

Whether you are a developer or a non-technical user, the AMP plugin is beneficial. Developers can utilize advanced tools to achieve full AMP compatibility, while non-developers can easily create AMP-compatible sites without dealing with complex validation issues.

Comparing to Alternatives

AMP by the official contributor team is one of several plugins that bring Accelerated Mobile Pages support to WordPress, competing with other AMP-focused tools that offer similar templating and validation features.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Backed by an active development team with regular updates
Strong theme and plugin compatibility tooling for AMP validation
No known security vulnerabilities on record
Free to use with no paid tier limiting core functionality

Weaknesses

Compatibility issues reported with popular themes and plugins
Can introduce critical errors that disrupt site functionality
Setup and configuration can be complex for non-technical users

User Sentiment Analysis

With 367 ratings, AMP holds a 3.8/5 average, but the distribution is polarized: 60.8% give it 5 stars while 21.3% give it just 1 star, pointing to a plugin that works very well for some setups and poorly for others.

Positive highlights

"Very good plugin, and good support also" — koskar22
"Needs improvements" but still rated it highly, suggesting underlying satisfaction — sahilwebservices
Praised for its development activity despite critique of execution — ohantekten (5★ despite critical tone)

Common complaints

AMP rendering breaks the user experience work done on the rest of the site, and can hurt SEO rather than help it

Weaknesses

Mixed compatibility with themes and plugins causing site errors
Some users report the plugin destabilizes their site upon removal
Perceived complexity and diminishing relevance as AMP's importance has declined

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners specifically committed to the AMP framework for mobile page speed and who are comfortable troubleshooting compatibility issues with themes and plugins. Best suited for technically confident users or those with developer support.

Not ideal for

Users seeking a plug-and-play solution, or those with complex theme/plugin stacks where compatibility conflicts are more likely. Site owners prioritizing SEO stability and site speed through lightweight themes may be better served skipping AMP entirely.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The plugin is entirely free and includes full AMP page generation, template support, and validation tools needed to implement Accelerated Mobile Pages on a WordPress site.

Final Verdict

AMP presents a genuinely split reputation: a majority of users are satisfied enough to leave 5-star reviews, yet over a quarter of all ratings are negative, citing compatibility problems, site-breaking errors, and doubts about AMP's actual SEO and UX benefits. With no recorded security vulnerabilities, the plugin is safe from a risk standpoint, but functional reliability is inconsistent depending on the site's theme and plugin stack.

Given the availability of alternatives like AMP WP, easy AMP, and AMP for WP, users unhappy with compatibility issues have options to explore. For those still invested in the AMP ecosystem, this free plugin remains a capable core tool, but it demands patience for setup and troubleshooting, and it's not ideal for sites where stability and a smooth user experience are the top priority.
