What It Does

If you manage a multi-author WordPress blog or WordPress sites for clients, then you may have wondered if it was possible to clean up the WordPress admin area for your users. There are lots of things in the WordPress admin area that your users don’t need to see or use. This plugin helps you to hide unnecessary items from the WordPress admin area.

Adminimize makes it easy to remove items from view based on a user’s role. The plugin changes the administration backend and gives you the power to assign rights on certain parts. Admins can activate or deactivate every part of the menu and even parts of the sub-menu. Meta fields can be administered separately for posts and pages. Certain parts of the write menu can be deactivated separately for admins or non-admins. The header of the backend is minimized and optimized to give you more space, and the structure of the menu gets changed to make it more logical. This can all be done per user so each role and their resulting users can have their own settings.

The plugin supports all functions for custom post types automatically in the settings page. It is also possible to add your own options to hide areas in the back-end of WordPress. You must only provide an ID or class, a selector, of the markup that you will hide.

Good news, this plugin is free for everyone! Since it’s released under the GPL, you can use it free of charge on your personal or commercial blog.

Comparing to Alternatives

Adminimize sits in a crowded field of admin menu and dashboard customization plugins. It has long been a go-to choice for controlling what different user roles see in wp-admin, but newer entrants offer more modern interfaces and active development.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Granular, role-based control over admin menus, dashboard widgets, and admin bar items
Long track record and proven reliability across many WordPress versions
Free with no feature paywall, appealing to budget-conscious site owners
Handles edge cases well, such as cleaning up stale admin bar links after migrations

Weaknesses

Interface feels dated compared to newer, more visual alternatives like WP Adminify or Admin Menu Editor
Slower update cadence has led some users to worry about long-term maintenance
Occasional compatibility issues with third-party plugin menus and JS dependencies (e.g., select2 errors)

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.7/5 average from 254 ratings, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive—89.4% five-star reviews versus just 5.5% in the 1-2 star range. Users consistently praise its reliability for role-based admin customization, though a small minority express concern about update frequency.

Positive highlights

walkerboh2112 called it a "LIFESAVER" for cleaning up stale admin bar links after a domain migration
marziom (Italy) said it perfectly solved a problem restricting non-expert users from destabilizing booking calendar settings
Tracy Mora C. described it as "one of the best plugins" for customizing the dashboard and key sections
SSVapes simply called it "a huge help", thanking the developers
jeanlarrota32, despite a 3-star rating, still called the plugin "super" overall

Common complaints

Concern that the plugin has not been updated in two years, raising fears of abandonment

Weaknesses

A known missing authorization vulnerability (medium severity) existed prior to version 1.11.12
An older cross-site scripting vulnerability was fixed back in 2014, indicating a history of security issues
Users have reported minor bugs, such as inability to hide certain plugin menus and JavaScript console errors

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Adminimize is best suited for site administrators and agencies managing multi-user WordPress installs who need fine-grained control over what different roles can see and access in wp-admin, including menus, dashboard widgets, and the admin bar. It's especially useful for simplifying the backend for non-technical clients or staff.

Not ideal for

It may not suit users seeking a modern, actively maintained interface or those wary of plugins with a history of security vulnerabilities, even if patched. Site owners on tightly regulated or high-security sites should confirm they're running the latest version and monitor for further updates given the slower release cadence.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version offers full functionality: role-based hiding of admin menus, submenus, dashboard widgets, admin bar items, and metaboxes, with no artificial feature restrictions reported by users.

Final Verdict

Adminimize earns its strong 4.7-star reputation through genuinely useful, granular admin customization that has helped users solve real-world problems, from post-migration cleanup to restricting client access on sensitive site sections. The overwhelmingly positive reviews reflect a mature, functional tool that does what it promises without a paywall.

That said, prospective users should weigh the plugin's slower update pace and its history of two known vulnerabilities—one fixed as recently as version 1.11.12—against the many capable alternatives now available, some with more modern interfaces and active development. For those willing to keep the plugin updated and who value its proven feature set, Adminimize remains a solid, cost-free choice.
