What It Does

Advanced File Manager is a powerful tool for managing WordPress files directly from your dashboard. This plugin allows you to perform various file operations such as copy, paste, rename, edit, delete, upload, and download without needing FTP or cPanel.

With features like flexible root directory access, frontend file management, and complete control over files located both within and outside your WordPress root directory, it simplifies file management for both casual users and developers. You can also create document libraries and manage files securely with role-based access controls.

Advanced File Manager enhances your workflow with a user-friendly interface, drag-and-drop functionality, and the ability to preview files without downloading them. It also supports integration with cloud storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Amazon S3, making it a versatile solution for file management.

Comparing to Alternatives

Advanced File Manager competes with several established file management plugins for WordPress, ranging from simple upload tools to more robust frontend document portals. Its long feature list and frontend capabilities set it apart, though its security track record is worth weighing against rivals.

Some users report bloat or unwanted features (e.g., AI integration) being added over time
Occasional version updates have caused site errors, per user reports

User Sentiment Analysis

With 438 ratings and a 4.8/5 average, sentiment toward this plugin is overwhelmingly positive—94.3% of reviewers gave 5 stars, and only 3.4% left a 1-2 star review. Recent feedback highlights strong support and reliable frontend functionality, though a small minority express frustration with recent changes.

Common complaints

Unwanted AI feature (Code Pilot) added with a persistent 'NEW' badge that cannot be dismissed
Perception that the plugin has become cluttered with advertising and harder to use compared to earlier versions

Weaknesses

A significant history of 11 recorded vulnerabilities, including a critical OS command injection flaw fixed only recently
Repeated pattern of arbitrary file upload and access vulnerabilities across multiple past versions

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners who need a full-featured frontend and backend file manager—especially membership sites, photography clubs, or teams wanting to grant members controlled file access without FTP or SSH—will find this plugin's permission system and support quality genuinely valuable.

Not ideal for

Security-conscious administrators managing sensitive files, or those who don't diligently apply plugin updates, should be cautious given the plugin's repeated history of high and critical severity vulnerabilities. Users who dislike added AI features or prefer a minimal, no-frills tool may also want to look elsewhere.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version offers a genuinely capable file manager, including frontend file access, drag-and-drop functionality, and enough permission handling for many small sites and teams, according to reviewer feedback.

Pro version (19 - 79 USD / one-time)

The Pro version typically extends the plugin with advanced permission and access-level controls, expanded frontend document library features, and priority support, appealing to businesses and membership sites needing finer-grained file management.

Final Verdict

Advanced File Manager earns its strong 4.8-star rating through genuinely useful frontend file management, responsive support, and features that reviewers say eliminate the need for FTP or SSH access. Complaints are rare and mostly relate to added features like AI integration rather than core functionality, suggesting most users find real day-to-day value in the plugin.

However, its security history is a serious consideration—11 recorded vulnerabilities, including a recent critical command injection flaw, indicate a pattern worth taking seriously. Prospective users should ensure they update promptly and weigh this risk against the plugin's strong usability and support reputation, particularly if handling sensitive files or operating in a security-critical environment.
