Comparing to Alternatives

This plugin fills a specific gap left by Contact Form 7's move to reCAPTCHA v3, and while there are many CAPTCHA plugins for other form builders, few target this exact CF7 v2 restoration use case as directly.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Restores the familiar, transparent reCAPTCHA v2 checkbox experience that CF7 dropped in favor of v3
Lets site owners choose which forms get protected rather than forcing v3 sitewide
Avoids v3's occasional false-positive submission blocking
Solves compatibility friction with cookie consent managers that struggled with v3

Weaknesses

Narrowly scoped to CF7 users only, unlike broader multi-form-builder CAPTCHA plugins
No official pro tier, so support and roadmap depend entirely on volunteer maintenance

User Sentiment Analysis

With 88 of 89 ratings at 5 stars (98.9%) and just one 2-star outlier, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive. Reviewers consistently frame this plugin as a fix for a problem CF7 itself created by dropping native v2 support.

Positive highlights

"Thank you for this plugin, we can use reCaptcha v2 again" — rix
"This plugin allows me to decide which forms should be protected... makes the rejection process much more transparent to user" — Alex Agranov

"Thank you, for this plugin!" — Danylo

Common complaints

Weaknesses

No reCAPTCHA v3 option is offered, which one reviewer specifically requested
Entirely dependent on Google's reCAPTCHA v2 service continuing to be supported

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners running Contact Form 7 who miss the classic reCAPTCHA v2 checkbox, want selective per-form protection, or have run into v3's silent submission blocking or cookie-consent conflicts.

Not ideal for

Users who want reCAPTCHA v3's invisible, frictionless verification, or who use form builders other than Contact Form 7, since this plugin is purpose-built for CF7 only.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The plugin is fully free and provides complete reCAPTCHA v2 integration for Contact Form 7, including per-form enable/disable control, addressing the exact gap left when CF7 switched to v3.

Final Verdict

This plugin enjoys a near-perfect rating and a clean security record, with zero known vulnerabilities and a very low WPScan risk score. Reviewers are vocal about how it solves a genuine frustration with Contact Form 7's default reCAPTCHA v3 behavior, restoring choice and transparency without any reported downsides beyond a single request for v3 support alongside v2.

For CF7 users specifically, it's a low-risk, high-value addition backed by strong community sentiment. Those using other form builders will need one of the listed alternatives instead, but within its niche, this plugin is a well-regarded, free, and secure solution.

FAQ

No and yes. Google reCaptcha has specific keys for each API. If you are doing an upgrade from a previous version of Contact Form 7 to the current version you will need to re-add the Version 2 API keys using the traditional method. That being said you can set the plugin usage to default and it will use the inherit Contact Form 7 reCaptcha Version 3 API.
