What It Does

The ShortPixel Image Optimizer is a powerful tool designed to optimize images and PDFs for your website. With just one click, you can bulk compress images to next-gen formats like WebP and AVIF, significantly boosting your site's speed.

This plugin is user-friendly and works seamlessly with any type of website, from small blogs to large WooCommerce stores. It offers features such as lazy loading, smart cropping, and resizing to ensure your images are optimized without losing quality.

ShortPixel also includes a built-in global Content Delivery Network (CDN) to deliver optimized images quickly, enhancing user experience and improving your SEO performance. With options for both lossy and lossless compression, you can choose the best method for your needs.

Comparing to Alternatives

ShortPixel competes in a crowded image optimization space alongside plugins like Imagify, Smush, EWWW, and Optimole. It differentiates itself with strong compression ratios, AVIF/WebP support, and a well-regarded support team, but faces stiff competition from alternatives offering similar cloud-based compression.

Top alternatives

Strong, consistently praised compression quality and file size reduction
Highly rated customer support cited repeatedly across reviews
Support for modern formats like WebP and AVIF
AI-based image SEO features appreciated by several users
Simple setup process for most standard use cases

Weaknesses

History of security vulnerabilities requiring multiple patches over the years
Reports of broken images and CDN issues after plugin removal
Dashboard notification spam frustrates some long-term users

User Sentiment Analysis

With 819 ratings and an overall 4.5/5 score, sentiment is largely positive—85.8% of users give 5 stars. However, a notable 9.2% 1-star share suggests a minority of users encounter serious, disruptive issues rather than mild dissatisfaction.

Common complaints

Custom thumbnail sizes get broken by the optimizer without warning
No clear backup warning before running bulk optimization, leading to orphaned images and manual cleanup
Excessive dashboard notifications from the developer

Weaknesses

Seven recorded medium-severity vulnerabilities patched over several years, including PHP object injection and stored XSS
Risk of broken images or site disruption during deactivation or uninstallation
Notification spam cited as an ongoing annoyance by experienced users

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners who want strong, reliable image compression with responsive customer support, and who are comfortable keeping the plugin updated and backing up their site before bulk operations. Users prioritizing compression quality and AI-driven image SEO features will likely be satisfied.

Not ideal for

Users who are not diligent about applying updates promptly, given the plugin's history of medium-severity vulnerabilities, or those with complex sites using custom thumbnail sizes and CDN setups who need assurance against breakage during removal or bulk recovery.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version offers a monthly quota of image compressions, WebP/AVIF conversion, and core optimization tools sufficient for smaller sites with modest image libraries.

Pro version (3.99 - 31.99 USD / month)

Paid plans scale with monthly image compression credits, offer priority support, AI-powered image SEO tools, and CDN delivery, catering to larger sites and agencies with heavier optimization needs.

Final Verdict

ShortPixel earns its strong overall rating through genuinely effective compression and support that reviewers repeatedly praise as fast and professional. The AI image SEO features add extra value beyond basic optimization, and most users report smooth, hassle-free experiences.

That said, the recurring pattern of medium-severity vulnerabilities patched over multiple years, combined with real user reports of broken images during removal or bulk recovery, warrants caution. Users should keep the plugin diligently updated and maintain backups before major operations. For most sites, ShortPixel remains a solid choice, but those with complex setups or low tolerance for risk may want to weigh alternatives like Imagify or EWWW as well.

FAQ

ShortPixel consistently has better compression rates along with more features, backup support and has very affordable one-time or monthly plans.
Here are a couple of independent reviews:
AuthorityHacker – “ShortPixel is our tool of choice, simply because it’s pretty much automated – we just let it do its thing.” (read full review)
WP Modula – “One of the reasons I’m personally a huge fan of ShortPixel is the built-in support for next-gen image formats like WebP.” (read full review)

You have to activate the plugin in the network admin and then activate it manually on each individual site in the multisite. Once you have done that, the Settings menu appears and you can add the API key for each individual site.
As an alternative, you can edit wp-config.php and add this line:

define('SHORTPIXEL_API_KEY', 'APIKEY');

where APIKEY is the API Key received upon sign up.
If configured that way, the API key will be used for all the sites of the multisite but will only be visible on the main site’s Settings page, being hidden for the rest of the sites.

There is a simple way to hide the API key, all you need to do is to add these two lines in your wp-config.php:

define('SHORTPIXEL_API_KEY', '<<your api key here>>'); define('SHORTPIXEL_HIDE_API_KEY', true);
