What It Does

Easily reorder Posts, Pages, Custom Post Types, Taxonomies, and Sites using a simple drag-and-drop interface.

Intuitive Custom Post Order allows you to sort items effortlessly in the WordPress admin. You can manage the order of Posts, Pages, Custom Post Types, Taxonomies, and even Sites in a Multisite setup.

To get started, navigate to Settings → Intuitive CPO and choose which content types you want to make sortable. After enabling this feature, simply drag and drop items in the list tables without any additional setup required.

If you create custom queries in your theme or plugins, remember to set orderby=menu_order and order=ASC to respect the drag-and-drop order. For the default WordPress order (by date), use orderby=date and order=DESC instead.

Comparing to Alternatives

Intuitive Custom Post Order sits in a crowded field of drag-and-drop ordering plugins, many of which offer similar core functionality with different focuses on posts, pages, or taxonomies.

Top alternatives

Some users report breakage with multisite setups and recent WordPress versions

User Sentiment Analysis

With 140 ratings, the plugin holds a strong 4.4/5 average, and 80.7% of reviewers gave it 5 stars. However, a notable 14.3% left 1-2 star reviews, largely driven by security concerns and compatibility issues, giving the plugin a more polarized reputation than the headline score suggests.

Positive highlights

"The best plugin for sorting posts, taxonomies, and more... necessary and sufficient functions are provided" — megane9988
"Works even for category archive listings. I wouldn't do without it" — Erik Eliasson
"Merci pour votre travail, ça fonctionne bien" — jcmais40

Common complaints

Reports of an authenticated admin SQL Injection vulnerability affecting versions up to 3.1.4.1
Plugin reportedly stopped working correctly with WordPress 6.5.4 after long-term use

Weaknesses

Two known vulnerabilities have been recorded, including an SQLi flaw and an arbitrary menu order update issue
Some users report the plugin breaking on multisite installs or with newer WordPress versions
Potential conflicts with similarly named ordering plugins can cause confusing sorting failures

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners who need a straightforward way to manually reorder posts, pages, taxonomies, or custom post types via drag-and-drop, and who keep their WordPress installation and plugins fully updated to avoid known security issues from older versions.

Not ideal for

Users running multisite networks, those needing guaranteed long-term compatibility with the latest WordPress core, or anyone unable to promptly update plugins, given the plugin's history of admin-level SQL injection and menu order vulnerabilities.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The plugin is entirely free and provides full custom ordering functionality for posts, pages, taxonomies, and custom post types without any locked features.

Final Verdict

Intuitive Custom Post Order earns solid praise for doing one job well: giving site owners an easy way to manually order content across post types and taxonomies. The high proportion of 5-star reviews reflects genuine satisfaction among long-term users, but the sizeable chunk of 1-2 star reviews, largely tied to a documented SQL injection vulnerability and compatibility complaints, tempers the overall picture.

Given the free, fully-featured alternatives available and this plugin's past security track record, users should ensure they're running the latest version before relying on it, especially on sensitive or multisite installations. It remains a reasonable choice for straightforward, single-site use, but more security-conscious users may want to weigh alternatives like Simple Page Ordering or CMS Tree Page View.

FAQ

No. After activation, items are sortable in the admin UI, and front-end queries for enabled post types are ordered by menu_order ASC automatically—unless you explicitly pass your own orderby.

Specify orderby=menu_order and order=ASC in your query args.

WP_Query:

<?php new WP_Query( array(     'post_type' => 'your_cpt',     'orderby'   => 'menu_order',     'order'     => 'ASC', ) ); ?>

get_posts():

<?php get_posts( array(     'post_type' => 'your_cpt',     'orderby'   => 'menu_order',     'order'     => 'ASC', ) ); ?>

Explicitly set:

<?php new WP_Query( array(     'orderby' => 'date',     'order'   => 'DESC', ) ); ?>

For get_posts(), the plugin supports a small switch:

<?php get_posts( array(     'orderby' => 'default_date',     'order'   => 'DESC', ) ); ?>

query_posts() is discouraged by WordPress core because it alters the main query in a fragile way.
Use pre_get_posts (recommended) or WP_Query instead.

Example with pre_get_posts to force date order on the main blog page:

<?php add_action( 'pre_get_posts', function( $q ) {     if ( is_admin() || ! $q->is_main_query() ) {         return;     }     if ( is_home() ) {         $q->set( 'orderby', 'date' );         $q->set( 'order', 'DESC' );     } } ); ?>
