What It Does

This is a free, lightweight, and easy-to-use plugin that allows you to seamlessly replace an image or file in your Media Library by uploading a new file in its place. No more deleting, renaming, and re-uploading files!

Now fully compatible with WP Offload Media, this plugin is a real timesaver. You can replace any uploaded file in the Edit Media view. Replacing media can be done in two ways: simply replace the file or replace it with a new file name and update all links.

A new beta feature allows you to remove the background of images for better integration with eCommerce solutions. This feature sends images to ShortPixel's API for background removal and returns them for preview.

Comparing to Alternatives

Enable Media Replace remains one of the most established tools for swapping media files while keeping the same URL, but it competes with several lighter-weight or more specialized options for similar tasks.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Long track record and wide adoption with over 300 ratings
Simple, focused workflow for replacing files without changing URLs
Free with no upsells or paid tiers to navigate
Actively maintained with a history of prompt security fixes

Weaknesses

History of multiple vulnerabilities, including a past critical-severity issue
Known unresolved compatibility problems with page builders like Bricks
Caching conflicts reported with certain hosting environments

User Sentiment Analysis

With 79.8% five-star ratings and an overall score of 4.4/5 from 302 reviews, sentiment is largely positive, though a notable 12.6% of users left 1-2 star reviews, pointing to some recurring friction for a subset of users.

Positive highlights

tovapee calls it a plugin that "should be pre-installed in any WordPress" for how much time it saves replacing images sitewide
Klaus Wilde praises it as "the best tool ever and still free"
myracat says it was the reason their team switched to WordPress, calling it "a necessity" for updating screenshots in multiple places
TMTRT highlights how it saved time by letting them update a linked PDF without breaking external URLs
Z, after early trouble, reports the developers responded quickly and the plugin now works well as "a great time saver"

Common complaints

Unresolved integration issue with Bricks Builder that can break pages, acknowledged by developers but not fixed for over a year

Weaknesses

A documented history of ten known vulnerabilities, including one rated critical, though all have been patched in subsequent releases
Reports of caching conflicts with certain hosts, such as SiteGround, that can prevent replacements from taking effect
Long-standing compatibility gap with Bricks Builder left unresolved

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners and agencies who frequently need to swap images, PDFs, or other media files without breaking existing links across many pages will find this plugin a genuine time-saver, especially for simple sites without complex page builders.

Not ideal for

Users on Bricks Builder sites, or those on aggressively caching hosts like SiteGround, may run into real functional issues. Given the plugin's history of security vulnerabilities (including past critical-severity flaws), users should ensure they are always running the latest version.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version provides full core functionality: replacing any media file in the library while preserving its original filename and URL, useful for updating images, PDFs, and other assets sitewide without broken links.

Final Verdict

Enable Media Replace earns its strong reputation with a simple, genuinely useful feature that many users feel should be built into WordPress itself. The overwhelmingly positive review distribution reflects real time savings for common workflows like updating linked PDFs or swapping images across many pages at once.

That said, prospective users should weigh the plugin's lengthy vulnerability history, including a past critical-rated flaw, and the unresolved Bricks Builder conflict that has lingered for over a year. Keeping the plugin updated is essential, and those using Bricks Builder or heavily cached hosting setups should test carefully before relying on it in production.
