What It Does

EWWW Image Optimizer is designed to help you speed up your website by optimizing images. Large images can slow down your site, but with this plugin, you can ensure that your images are compressed and properly formatted for the web.

The plugin allows you to optimize existing images and automatically compress new uploads. It supports various formats including JPG, PNG, GIF, AVIF, and WebP, ensuring that you get the best quality at the smallest file size.

With features like lazy loading, bulk optimization, and compatibility with numerous plugins, EWWW Image Optimizer makes it easy to manage your site's images. The core plugin is free, while premium services offer enhanced compression and additional features.

Comparing to Alternatives

EWWW Image Optimizer competes in a crowded image optimization space with numerous cloud-based and local compression plugins. It differentiates itself by offering flexible local compression alongside optional cloud/API optimization, appealing to users who want control over where their images are processed.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Works effectively even on the free tier, handling large image libraries without forcing upgrades
Supports local optimization, giving users independence from cloud quotas
Automatic WebP conversion is praised across many reviews
Bulk optimization handles very large media libraries (tens of thousands of images) reliably
Responsive support team frequently mentioned by users

Weaknesses

Longer history of security advisories compared to some newer competitors
Interface can feel complex or dense for beginners due to the many configuration options
No built-in CDN delivery unlike some cloud-first alternatives

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.8/5 average from 1,839 ratings, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive—over 90% of reviewers gave 5 stars, and only 4.7% left a 1 or 2 star rating. Recent reviews reinforce this, frequently praising speed improvements, ease of use, and reliable bulk processing.

Positive highlights

"This excellent plugin... has made my image-heavy site really noticeably quicker/more responsive" — alanpaterson997
"Great plugin for bulk optimization of images to webp! It took several days for my 50,000 images... but after that plugin keep converting new images to webp automatically" — srkiller
"It optimized me a 50k images at once! Site speed increased, client happy!" — nastjawebdev

Common complaints

Admin-side slowness reported after activation, with the site returning to normal speed only after deactivating the plugin

Weaknesses

A documented history of seven WPScan vulnerabilities, including a stored XSS issue fixed as recently as version 8.7.4
Multiple past CSRF and sensitive information exposure issues, though all have since been patched
Occasional performance impact on the admin dashboard for some users

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners with large media libraries who want a proven, flexible image optimization tool that works well even on the free plan, and who are comfortable keeping plugins updated for security patches. It suits both technical users wanting local processing and those preferring convenience with optional cloud features.

Not ideal for

Users who are not diligent about applying updates should be cautious, given the plugin's history of multiple medium-severity vulnerabilities over the years. Those wanting a simpler, more minimal interface, or an all-in-one CDN-based solution, may prefer a more streamlined alternative.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version offers substantial value, including local image compression, bulk optimization, and automatic WebP conversion—features many users report using successfully even on very large image libraries without needing to upgrade.

Pro version (7 - 25 USD / month)

Paid tiers typically unlock cloud-based compression credits, faster processing, premium compression algorithms, and priority support, catering to higher-volume or performance-focused sites that want to offload processing rather than rely on local server resources.

Final Verdict

EWWW Image Optimizer earns its strong 4.8-star reputation through consistent performance, ease of use, and a free version generous enough to satisfy most everyday users, including those with tens of thousands of images. Reviews highlight reliable bulk processing, automatic WebP conversion, and responsive support as key strengths that keep users loyal over time.

However, its long vulnerability history—including a stored XSS flaw patched as recently as mid-2026—means users must stay diligent about updates, and this record is worth weighing against alternatives like ShortPixel, Imagify, or Smush, which offer similar functionality. For most users who keep the plugin updated, it remains a dependable, cost-effective choice; those seeking a lower security-risk profile or simpler setup may want to compare closely with competitors before committing.
