What It Does

Disable Comments is a powerful plugin that allows administrators to globally disable comments on their WordPress site. You can choose to disable comments based on post type, ensuring that you have full control over your site's comment functionality.

This plugin is particularly useful for stopping spam comments, as it provides support for WP-CLI, XML-RPC, and REST-API, making it easy to manage comments across your site.

With multi-site support, you can manage comments on multiple websites, allowing you to eliminate irrelevant comments from your entire network. The plugin hides all comment-related settings from the admin menu and dashboard, streamlining your WordPress experience.

Comparing to Alternatives

Disable Comments is one of the most established plugins in a crowded category of comment-disabling tools. Its long track record and broad feature set (network-wide, persistent, and content-type-specific controls) set it apart from many lighter-weight competitors, though the category itself offers plenty of simple, single-purpose options.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Mature, widely-used plugin with a large install base and long history
Supports multisite networks, not just single-site installs
Granular control over which post types and areas have comments disabled
Actively maintained with responsive developer support

Weaknesses

Past incident of injecting admin-area advertising, which damaged trust even though it was reverted
Many lighter alternatives exist for users who only need a simple on/off switch
Historical CSRF vulnerability, even though patched long ago

User Sentiment Analysis

With a 4.7/5 average from 280 ratings, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive — 90% of reviewers gave 5 stars. The 6.4% share of 1-2 star ratings suggests a small but vocal group of dissatisfied users, though no specific 1-2 star reviews were available in this dataset to detail their concerns.

Positive highlights

isolshell1 called it 'BRILLIANT,' praising how it cleared 500+ spam comments in minutes
fengyuan7558 said it 'completely disables comments across posts, pages, media, or even an entire multisite network'
Robert described it as a 'Timesaver' with clear, easy-to-understand options and a responsive developer team
grome32 called it 'a lifesaver for managing comments' with an effective spam filter

Common complaints

Weaknesses

A known high-severity CSRF vulnerability (CVSS 9) was recorded in an old version, though fixed in 1.0.4
At least two reviewers (schwdim, tumshie) reported the plugin briefly injected admin-area/editor advertising for another product, damaging trust even though it was resolved quickly
6.4% of ratings are 1-2 star, indicating some recurring dissatisfaction not detailed in available reviews

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Site owners and agencies managing multiple sites or multisite networks who want a reliable, well-tested way to disable comments across specific post types, pages, or the entire site, and who value a plugin with a long history and active support.

Not ideal for

Users who are highly sensitive to plugins that alter admin UI or have previously injected promotional content, or anyone wanting the absolute simplest single-purpose tool without the feature depth (and legacy security baggage) of a long-standing plugin.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version is fully featured, offering comment disabling across post types, pages, media, and multisite networks, along with persistent settings and admin menu control — there is no artificial feature gating.

Final Verdict

Disable Comments remains a trusted, feature-rich choice for disabling comments at scale, particularly for multisite networks and agencies managing many client sites. The overwhelmingly positive rating distribution and reviewer praise for ease of use and responsive support reinforce its reputation, though the brief lapse into injecting admin advertising — even though swiftly fixed — is a legitimate trust concern worth noting.

With no active paid tier, the free version offers full value, and the plugin's long track record outweighs its one patched historical vulnerability from over a decade ago. Users wary of past trust issues or wanting a leaner alternative have several credible options to consider, but for most, Disable Comments still delivers dependable, well-supported functionality.
