What It Does

Classic Widgets is an official plugin maintained by the WordPress team that restores the previous (classic) WordPress widgets settings screens. It will be supported and maintained to 2024, or as long as is necessary.

Once activated and when using a classic (non-block) theme, this plugin restores the previous widgets settings screens and disables the block editor from managing widgets. There is no other configuration, the classic widgets settings screens are enabled or disabled by either enabling or disabling this plugin.

Comparing to Alternatives

Classic Widgets sits alongside a handful of plugins that address the same frustration with WordPress's block-based widget editor, though each takes a slightly different approach to restoring or managing the classic experience.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Simple, single-purpose plugin that does exactly one thing without added complexity
Backed by an official WordPress team plugin, giving users confidence in its longevity and reliability
Massive install base and near-universal praise suggest it works consistently across setups
No configuration required — activate and the classic widgets interface returns immediately

Weaknesses

Offers no middle ground for users who want some block features alongside classic widgets, unlike alternatives that allow more granular control
Relies on continued WordPress core support for the classic widget system, so its long-term future depends on decisions outside the plugin's control

User Sentiment Analysis

With 272 ratings and a 4.9/5 average, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive — nearly 95% of reviewers gave five stars, and only 1.8% rated it 1-2 stars. The tone across reviews is one of relief and gratitude, with many users describing the plugin as a fix for a problem they didn't ask for.

Positive highlights

mattmx calls it simply "Excellent" and thanks the developers for the tool
Erez Speiser says the plugin "totally saved me" after struggling with glitches and errors in the block widget system
Quotes Ninja appreciates it for its "simplicity and classic experience"
Sepi notes it removes the "headache" of looking at the modern widgets page
Helison S. Cruz calls it the "Best Plugin Ever" while thanking the WordPress team for keeping it maintained

Common complaints

Weaknesses

One recent review flags that the classic toolbar isn't staying sticky under WordPress 6.8, suggesting some compatibility lag with core updates
No official paid tier means development pace and support depend entirely on the WordPress team's ongoing priorities

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Ideal for site owners and editors who found the block-based widgets editor confusing, buggy, or simply unnecessary for their workflow, and who want to instantly restore the familiar drag-and-drop classic widgets screen without any setup.

Not ideal for

Not the right choice for users who want to embrace block-based widget editing long-term or who need advanced sidebar management features beyond restoring the classic interface — alternatives like Custom Sidebars may suit those needs better. With no known vulnerabilities recorded, security is not a concern here.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The plugin is entirely free and does exactly what it promises: it disables the block-based widgets editor and restores the classic widgets screen, with zero configuration needed.

Final Verdict

Classic Widgets earns its near-perfect rating by solving a very specific, widely-felt frustration cleanly and reliably. User sentiment is strongly positive, with reviewers repeatedly expressing relief at being able to bypass the block widgets editor, and there are no recorded security vulnerabilities to raise concern. The only blemish is a minor compatibility note about the toolbar not staying sticky in the latest WordPress version, but this hasn't dented overall satisfaction.

Given its zero cost, official backing, and simplicity, it's an easy recommendation for anyone who prefers the classic widgets workflow over the block editor. Users wanting more flexibility, such as conditional sidebar logic or partial block adoption, should look at alternatives like Custom Sidebars or Widget Disable instead. For its narrow but well-executed purpose, Classic Widgets remains a dependable, low-risk choice.
