What It Does

Yoast SEO is designed to enhance your website's SEO performance by providing real-time feedback and guidance. With built-in schema integration, it helps search engines better understand your content. The plugin offers advanced tools for content analysis and readability, ensuring your writing is engaging and user-friendly.

Setting up Yoast SEO is straightforward, thanks to its step-by-step configuration wizard. It also allows for seamless migration from other SEO plugins, ensuring you do not lose any existing SEO data. The premium version unlocks AI-powered tools that assist in generating SEO-friendly titles and meta descriptions, optimizing content placement, and summarizing content quickly.

Additionally, Yoast SEO takes care of technical SEO aspects, such as automated meta tag optimization and advanced XML sitemaps. Regular updates ensure the plugin remains compatible with the latest SEO standards. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced user, Yoast SEO equips you with the necessary tools to tackle your SEO challenges effectively.

Comparing to Alternatives

Yoast SEO remains the category benchmark, but it now competes with a crowded field of SEO plugins that promise similar or simpler feature sets, often at a lower price or with less bloat.

Top alternatives

Strengths

Mature, well-tested content and readability analysis refined over more than a decade
Deep integration with the Block Editor and Elementor with real-time feedback
Handles technical SEO essentials (XML sitemaps, canonical tags, Schema.org data) automatically
Large, established user base with extensive documentation and community knowledge
Trusted brand name that many users return to after trying alternatives

Weaknesses

Frequent upsell prompts for the premium version can feel intrusive in the dashboard
Considered by some long-time users to be less innovative than newer, lighter-weight competitors like Rank Math
Free version support is limited, which frustrates users expecting help after years of loyalty

User Sentiment Analysis

With 27,819 ratings and a 4.8/5 average, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive—93.4% of reviewers give 5 stars. Still, a vocal 3.5% leave 1-2 star reviews, often citing support issues, compatibility bugs, or discomfort with new AI-related features.

Positive highlights

"The content analysis feels the most mature, and the readability checks are handy for writers on our team" — piiather
"Automatically handles complex backend requirements like XML sitemaps, canonical tags, and structured Schema.org data out of the box" — Flori Myrta
"It has been a practical and valuable addition to my technical SEO workflow on a content-heavy WordPress site" — Jonathan Santo
"My blog posts started showing up on google way quicker after installing this... setup took like 5 mins" — leroy56
"Free version is honestly enough for most ppl. Solid choice" — carine69

Common complaints

Free-tier users report receiving little to no meaningful support for serious issues
Premium plugin can conflict with core Yoast features (e.g., breaking the Social tab) and support blames themes rather than investigating
Compatibility issues with WordPress 6.9.x causing broken shortcodes, plugin conflicts, and display bugs
WooCommerce compatibility problems, including products failing to display or generating excessive canonical pages
Support accused of giving canned responses and refusing to fix documented PHP 8.3 deprecation warnings
Backlash over the llms.txt/AI features, with users feeling it exposes their content to AI scraping rather than protecting it
Perception that the plugin has become outdated and slow to adapt to modern SEO practices

Weaknesses

17 recorded vulnerabilities historically, including several medium-severity stored XSS issues, though all have been patched
Recent (2026) medium-severity XSS vulnerabilities show security issues are still surfacing in current versions
Support quality for free users is a recurring pain point, especially for long-term users expecting more

Who Should Use This?

Best for

Bloggers, content creators, and businesses who want a trusted, well-documented SEO plugin with strong readability guidance and automatic handling of technical SEO basics like sitemaps and schema. Ideal for users who value stability and a large support community over cutting-edge features.

Not ideal for

Users running complex WooCommerce setups, sites on the latest WordPress versions where compatibility bugs have been reported, or anyone needing responsive support without a premium subscription. Security-conscious users should also ensure they stay updated given the plugin's history of patched vulnerabilities, including recent 2026 XSS issues.

Pricing & Value

Free version includes

The free version covers core on-page SEO analysis, readability checks, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, and basic Schema.org markup—enough for most standard websites, as many reviewers confirm.

Pro version (99 USD / year)

Yoast SEO Premium typically adds redirect management, internal linking suggestions, multiple focus keyphrases, social previews, and priority support, though some reviewers report premium features causing conflicts and receiving unsatisfactory support responses.

Final Verdict

Yoast SEO's 4.8-star rating across nearly 28,000 reviews reflects its status as a dependable, long-standing choice for WordPress SEO, with praise centered on its mature content analysis and hands-off handling of technical SEO. However, the negative reviews reveal real friction points: inconsistent support for free users, compatibility bugs with recent WordPress and WooCommerce versions, and growing frustration with AI-related features like llms.txt that some feel work against site owners' interests.

With strong alternatives like Rank Math, SEOPress, and The SEO Framework offering comparable or lighter-weight functionality, Yoast's dominance is no longer unchallenged. Its patched-but-numerous vulnerability history, including medium-severity XSS issues discovered as recently as 2026, means users should keep the plugin diligently updated. For most standard sites, Yoast remains a safe, capable default—but users with complex setups or higher support expectations may find better value elsewhere.

FAQ

Having an XML sitemap can be beneficial for SEO, as Google can retrieve essential pages of a website very fast, even if the internal linking of a site is not flawless.
The sitemap index and individual sitemaps are updated automatically as you add or remove content, and will include the post types you want search engines to index. Post types marked as noindex will not appear in the sitemap. Learn more about XML sitemaps.

The steps below are a temporary solution, as manual edits made to theme files may be overwritten with future theme updates. Please contact the theme developer for a permanent solution. We have written an article about the importance of breadcrumbs for SEO.

To implement the breadcrumbs function in Yoast SEO, you will have to edit your theme. We recommend that a backup is taken prior to any editing of the theme files. Your host provider can help you take a backup.
Copy the following code into your theme where you want the breadcrumbs to be. If you are not sure, you will need to experiment with placement:

<?php if ( function_exists( 'yoast_breadcrumb' ) ) {     yoast_breadcrumb( '<p id="breadcrumbs">','</p>' ); } ?>

Common places to put your breadcrumbs are inside your single.php or page.php file, just above the page’s title. Another option that is easy in some themes is pasting the code at the very end of header.php.

In most non-WooTheme themes, this code snippet should not be added to your functions.php file.
Alternatively, you can manually add the breadcrumb shortcode to individual posts or pages: [wpseo_breadcrumb]

If you need more details or a step-by-step guide, read our implementation guide for Yoast SEO breadcrumbs.
